Appearance
Kael'zar is a broad-shouldered tiefling with deep umber-red skin, swept-back black hair, and polished obsidian horns that curve gently upward from his temples. His amber eyes have a steady, attentive quality, and his long tail is usually wrapped once around his ankle when he is standing still. He wears a slightly oversized scholar's robe patched neatly at the elbows with dark blue cloth, sturdy travel boots dusted by roadwork, and a meticulously maintained leather spellbook case. His most noticeable habit is the care he gives to one pale linen collar, which he washes and folds with almost ceremonial precision despite the wear on the rest of his clothing.
Mannerisms
Kael'zar speaks in measured sentences and often pauses to organize his thoughts before answering. When concentrating, he traces geometric shapes on nearby surfaces with one claw. He straightens crooked books, labels unfamiliar objects, and quietly counts under his breath when preparing a spell.
Personality
Kael'zar is patient, studious, and unfailingly courteous, especially toward people who expect him to be dangerous. He takes promises literally and prefers clear plans, written agreements, and evidence that can be checked. Beneath his reserved manner is a deep compassion for the overlooked, expressed through practical help rather than grand speeches.
Ideals
Knowledge must serve the vulnerable. A truth that is hoarded, distorted, or used to excuse cruelty is not wisdom, it is merely a sharper kind of ignorance.
Bonds
Kael'zar carries his mentor's unfinished letter and will risk much to discover what happened to the missing wizard. He also feels responsible for protecting his hometown's people from threats they lack the knowledge to recognize.
Flaws
Kael'zar can become so focused on proving the correct answer that he fails to notice when someone needs comfort rather than instruction. He distrusts improvisation, sometimes treating an uncertain but compassionate choice as inferior to a perfectly reasoned one. He also has difficulty abandoning a mystery, even when pursuing it places his companions in danger.
Quirks
Background
Kael'zar was born in a small riverside town where his tiefling blood made strangers cautious and his unusual strength made them expect violence. His mother, a keeper of ledgers for the local magistrate, taught him that rules were not merely chains, they were promises made visible. A traveling scholar later recognized Kael'zar's hunger for explanation and arranged for him to study under a patient but demanding wizard. There, Kael'zar learned to read ancient scripts, catalogue magical phenomena, and treat every spell as both a tool and a responsibility. His education ended abruptly when his mentor disappeared while researching a sealed collection of infernal contracts. Kael'zar inherited a single unfinished letter, several contradictory notes, and a warning that knowledge without judgment could become a weapon in the hands of anyone. He now travels as a researcher and apprentice wizard, seeking the truth behind the disappearance while helping ordinary people who are ignored by more celebrated scholars. He is determined to prove, through disciplined magic and visible acts of mercy, that his lineage does not dictate his character.
