Appearance
Spicy is a russet-furred kitsune with soot-dark paws, a cream muzzle, and five full tails usually tied together near the tips with red kitchen cord. Their fur is meticulously brushed around the face but left rougher along the shoulders, where flour, ash, and road dust tend to collect. They stand with their weight on the balls of their feet, leaning slightly forward as if ready to catch a falling bowl or rush toward a dying stranger. Their clerical vestments are practical, repeatedly mended, and stained with saffron, lamp oil, and medicinal herbs. A small iron fox charm hangs beside their holy symbol.
Mannerisms
Spicy tests the air before answering difficult questions, rubs thumb and forefinger together as if measuring ground pepper, and quietly counts the breaths of anyone who is injured. When waiting, they balance on one foot and keep the other heel lifted, ready to move.
Personality
Spicy is brisk, observant, and unexpectedly tender. They speak to the dying in the same practical tone they use with frightened animals and overheated soup, which makes people feel safer even when the words are blunt. They dislike grand displays of holiness and trust repeated small acts of care more than vows.
Ideals
Mercy is a craft. The dead deserve care, the living deserve another chance, and both should receive something warm before anyone starts preaching.
Bonds
The surviving families of the avalanche victims trust Spicy to carry their names and memorial offerings to the Last Hearth. Spicy also owes a debt to the old apothecary who taught them that a remedy is judged by whom it saves, not how elegant it looks.
Flaws
Spicy treats caution as cowardice and will take unnecessary risks to prove that they are not merely a clever animal tolerated for their usefulness. They also cannot resist correcting another person's cooking, even during funerals, negotiations, or imminent danger.
Quirks
Background
Spicy was born in a roadside market town where kitsune were tolerated so long as they were useful, quiet, and willing to work twice as hard as everyone else. They learned the trade of blending peppers, bitter roots, and fragrant seeds from an elderly human apothecary who noticed that Spicy could smell sickness before it showed in the skin. Their mixtures became popular with caravan cooks, but Spicy was more interested in the people who came back for remedies than the ones who came back for seasoning. During a winter crossing, a merchant caravan was trapped by an avalanche. Spicy spent three days rationing hot broth, treating frostbite, and sitting beside the dead so their bodies would not be taken by scavengers. In the silence beneath the snow, they heard the patient voice of the Keeper at the Last Hearth, a death-touched saint who taught that every life deserves dignity at its ending, and every survivor deserves the chance to keep going. Spicy entered the priesthood afterward, bringing their trade with them. They now travel as a Grave Domain cleric, offering both last rites and aggressively seasoned soup, convinced that mercy should be warm, practical, and impossible to mistake for indifference.
