Appearance
Kett Gaina is a lean, sharp-featured half-elf with warm brown skin, dark hair cut close at the sides, and a narrow copper streak above one ear. His green-brown eyes have the wary focus of someone who expects every room to contain a hidden exit. He wears well-maintained leather armor beneath a dark traveling coat, with a rapier at his hip and two daggers hidden in practical places. A small Andean-style woven cord, made by his late mother's family, is tied around his left wrist.
Mannerisms
Kett checks the nearest window whenever he enters a room, taps his thumb twice against his wrist cord when thinking, and rarely sits with his back to a door. When lying, he becomes unusually polite and uses people's full names.
Personality
Kett is observant, dryly humorous, and unfailingly attentive to small details. He prefers quiet competence to dramatic displays and treats every conversation as an exchange of leverage, though genuine kindness can catch him completely off guard. He has a soft spot for overlooked people, stray animals, and anyone trying to start over.
Ideals
Justice should be practical. If the law protects the powerful and abandons everyone else, then taking from the powerful is not theft, it is correction.
Bonds
He protects the dockworkers and hill families whose lives were ruined by the smuggling ring. He also carries his mother's woven wrist cord and will risk almost anything to recover the stolen records that could expose the ring's remaining patrons.
Flaws
Kett cannot resist stealing proof that someone is corrupt, even when the theft creates greater danger than the evidence is worth. He is suspicious of generosity, slow to forgive betrayal, and will sometimes choose a clever plan over a compassionate one simply because it gives him control.
Quirks
Background
Kett Gaina was raised between two worlds and never felt entirely claimed by either. His elven father worked as a clerk and translator in a riverside counting house, while his human mother came from a hill community whose woven cords and knot patterns carried family histories. Kett inherited his father's quick ears and his mother's patience with careful hands. When his mother died during a winter fever, the counting house took him in as a copyist, but the work taught him more about hidden ledgers, forged seals, and embezzled coin than honest bookkeeping ever could. At sixteen, Kett began carrying messages for a smuggling ring, first because he needed food and later because he discovered that the ring's leaders were exploiting dockworkers and selling medicine meant for poor neighborhoods. He learned to move unseen, open locks without splintering them, and lie convincingly to people who preferred not to look too closely. Eventually he betrayed the ring by stealing its records and exposing several of its leaders. The surviving members still want him dead, while the records remain hidden somewhere only Kett can find. He now takes work as a burglar, scout, and discreet investigator, using criminal methods against people he believes deserve to lose what they have stolen.
