Appearance
Kincade is a short, wiry rock gnome with warm brown skin, sharp features, and deep-set intelligent eyes that seem to measure every bolt in a room. His dark curls are tied back by a scratched metal headband, and his face is usually half-hidden behind goggles that reflect blue diagnostic light. He wears a patched, oil-stained dark blue jumpsuit with reinforced knees and elbows, a tool belt heavy with modern wrenches and precision instruments, and steel-toed boots marked by sparks and soot. A battered brass gear pendant hangs at his throat like a promise he refuses to break.
Mannerisms
He talks with his hands even when both are full of tools, taps two fingers against his goggles when thinking, and unconsciously leans closer to machinery as if listening for its secrets. When excited, he starts a sentence in a whisper and ends it at full speed. He often pauses mid-conversation to adjust a setting, tighten a bolt, or scribble a new idea onto whatever surface is nearest.
Personality
Kincade is exuberant, exacting, and relentlessly curious. He speaks with the bright intensity of someone who is always one beautiful mistake away from a breakthrough. Around other experts he becomes almost reverent, especially if they respect tools, systems, and practical cleverness. He is patient in the workshop, impatient with incompetence, and fiercely protective of anyone under his care. Under the chatter and sparks, he is deeply methodical, a planner who trusts diagrams, measurements, and hard-earned experience more than luck.
Ideals
Craft is responsibility. If a thing can be improved, reinforced, or made safer, then it should be. Kincade believes invention is only worthwhile when it protects people, preserves hard-won labor, and makes the world more reliable for those who live in it.
Bonds
His brass gear pendant belonged to the mentor who first taught him that craftsmanship is a responsibility, not a brag. He owes his career, and his life, to the guild that sheltered his family, and he will not let the district fall into neglect or corporate predation while he still has hands capable of turning a wrench.
Flaws
Kincade cannot leave a problem unsolved once he has taken it personally, even when walking away would be wiser. He talks faster when nervous and can miss obvious social cues because he is already three steps deep into the machine in front of him. He has a habit of treating dangerous situations like engineering challenges, which has nearly gotten him hurt more than once. He also hoards broken parts and half-finished concepts, convinced that every scrap might become the key to the next breakthrough.
Quirks
Background
Kincade was born in the Foundry District, where the city never really slept, it only changed shifts. He grew up under the glow of welding arcs and neon signage, learning early that broken things were not failures, they were opportunities. His family worked as repair specialists for a guild that kept the district's machinery, transit lines, and power relays running through heat waves, blackouts, and sabotage. While other children played in alleys, Kincade climbed service ladders, listened to machine hums, and memorized the smell of overheating circuits. By the time he was old enough to hold a soldering iron steady, he was already more comfortable inside a turbine housing than in a common room. His talent earned him a place in the guild, but his obsession with improvement made him restless. Kincade never believed a machine was finished just because it worked, only that it was ready for the next problem. When a warehouse fire nearly took out an entire industrial block, he stayed awake for three nights straight designing a portable defense launcher that could hold a perimeter on its own. That invention became the first version of his beloved eldritch cannon, a hard-edged little marvel that turned his reputation from gifted mechanic to indispensable problem solver. Now he works out of a crowded workshop packed with half-disassembled tech, constantly refining his creations, chasing cleaner solutions, and quietly making sure the people he cares about are never left defenseless.
