Appearance
Naru is a lean, broad-shouldered wood elf with weather-browned skin, dark green eyes, and straight black hair bound at the nape with a strip of faded red cloth from his old unit. His most noticeable feature is the way he eats and laughs, revealing slightly prominent lower canine teeth that give his otherwise restrained expression a sudden wolfish edge. He stands unnervingly still when listening, then moves with a quiet, economical stride that favors his left side, as if always keeping his sword arm ready. He wears well-maintained chain mail beneath a weather-stained green cloak and carries himself like a soldier who has never entirely left camp.
Mannerisms
Naru pauses before answering questions, as though checking the response against an internal field manual. When tense, he rolls his shoulders once and touches the rim of his shield. During meals he cuts food into identical portions, and his rare laughter shows his prominent lower canines before his expression settles again.
Personality
Naru is quiet, observant, and intensely practical. He prefers useful questions to polite conversation and tends to stand where he can see every entrance. He is not cruel, but he has little patience for grand declarations unsupported by preparation. Beneath his controlled exterior is a protective instinct that makes him step between danger and strangers before he has consciously decided to help.
Ideals
Duty. A promise made to protect someone is more important than rank, law, or reputation. If the official chain of command fails, responsibility still remains.
Bonds
The names of the soldiers who died under his command are written inside the rim of his shield. He will not allow their deaths to be rewritten as cowardice or forgotten as an inconvenience.
Flaws
Naru mistakes emotional honesty for operational weakness. He withholds information until he believes it is useful, then struggles to understand why others feel betrayed. He is also slow to forgive officers who give orders from safety, even when those officers are acting in good faith.
Quirks
Background
Naru was raised among the deep woodland patrols of his elven kin, where every trail was memorized and every silence had meaning. He learned to read broken fern stems before he learned to read a map, but the border war taught him a harsher lesson: nature did not care who had drawn the boundary lines. When raiders began using the forest paths to strike isolated villages, Naru joined the realm's standing army, believing disciplined force could protect people more reliably than ancient custom. He served as a shield-bearer, scout, and eventually a line sergeant, valued less for speeches than for noticing the one loose buckle, missing boot print, or nervous horse that warned of an ambush. His unit was disbanded after a campaign that ended in a politically convenient peace, leaving several soldiers blamed for a retreat ordered by officers far from the fighting. Naru refuses to let the dead become an argument used by the living. He now travels as a mercenary and escort, taking work that puts him between danger and those who cannot afford a trained blade, while quietly searching for the surviving members of his old unit.
