Appearance
Sefu is a lean, broad-shouldered kenku with charcoal-black feathers that fade to dull gray around his neck and wrists. He keeps his plumage carefully groomed, but leaves the feathers on his forearms slightly uneven because they are rubbed smooth by years of staff drills. He wears a plain, repaired monastery sash beneath practical travel clothes, with a short spear strapped across his back and a string of wooden prayer tokens tied around one wrist. Within a minute of meeting him, most people notice that his eyes rarely settle on faces. They move instead to exits, hands, windows, and the spaces behind people.
Mannerisms
Sefu pauses before answering, as if selecting the exact sound from a shelf in his memory. He bows slightly to doorways, thresholds, and empty rooms. When tense, he rubs the wooden tokens around his wrist and silently counts his breaths in groups of four.
Personality
Quiet, observant, and deliberate, Sefu speaks plainly and dislikes wasting motion or words. He is gentle with frightened people, patient with animals, and unexpectedly funny when he imitates a pompous officer or an overconfident merchant. Beneath his calm is a tightly controlled current of anger. He wants to believe that discipline can turn vengeance into justice, but he is not yet certain that the difference is real.
Ideals
Peace is not passivity. The strong must stand between violence and the powerless, but they must never learn to love the act of standing there.
Bonds
The Monastery of the Still Wing is still his home, even though no living soul may remain there. He carries its broken bronze handbell and will risk almost anything to discover what happened to its people.
Flaws
When anger rises, he disguises it as duty and becomes frighteningly difficult to dissuade. He is suspicious of easy forgiveness, especially his own, and sometimes mistakes restraint for cowardice. He also has a habit of treating every conversation as an interrogation, silently cataloging pauses, gestures, and possible exits.

Background
Sefu was raised in the secluded Monastery of the Still Wing, where kenku children were taught that every borrowed sound should serve a truthful purpose. The monastery guarded an ancient mountain pass, not through conquest, but through presence. Its temple guards learned to intercept violence, disarm aggressors, and end fights without hatred. Sefu took to the physical work immediately. He could hold a stance until his legs trembled, strike a hanging bell without making it ring, and cross the courtyard carrying a full water jar in each hand. Yet the order's teachings troubled him. Peace came easily to those who had never seen what violence could prevent, he thought. At times he wanted not merely to stop a blade, but to break the hand that held it. As part of his coming-of-age rite, Sefu left the monastery for a fortnight of fasting and meditation in the high ravines. When he returned, the monastery was silent. The gates stood open, the prayer halls were torn apart, and signs of battle marked the stone, but there were no bodies, no blood trail, and no clear sign of who had won. His teachers, friends, and fellow guards had vanished as completely as if the mountain had swallowed them. Since then, Sefu has wandered as a soldier without a banner, taking work that puts him between the helpless and those who would harm them. He searches for evidence of what happened while trying to live by the Still Wing's final lesson, that vengeance is another chain, even when it feels like justice.
