Thrain is a stout, muscular dwarf with skin the color of sun-baked granite. He has a magnificent, copper-colored beard braided with steel rings and soot-stained eyebrows. His face is marked by a jagged scar crossing his left cheek, earned during the defense of the Iron Pass. He wears heavy, well-maintained chain mail over dark wool tunics, and his iron shield bears the dented scars of a dozen skirmishes.

Thrain is a man of few words, preferring to let his blade and his discipline speak for him. He is stubbornly loyal to those he calls comrades and maintains a rigid military bearing even in casual settings. He believes that every problem can be solved with a solid plan and the right application of force.

For thirty years, Thrain served in the Stone-Guard, a specialized unit of mountain dwarves tasked with holding the narrowest passes of the northern ranges. He rose to the rank of sergeant, leading a squad that became a brotherhood of steel. His life changed during the Night of the Shattered Gates, when a massive drow raid overwhelmed his post. Thrain was the only one to survive, having been buried under the rubble of a collapsing watchtower while his brothers fell in the darkness above. Unable to return to his hold with the shame of survival, Thrain wandered into the surface lands. He has since transitioned from a soldier of a king to a soldier of fortune, yet he still carries himself with the same rigid honor. He seeks to find a cause worthy of his life, hoping that in battle, he might finally find a way to honor the memory of those he left behind in the stone.
