Appearance
Mirei Valen is a sturdy young human with warm brown skin, thick black hair worn in a loose braid, and thoughtful gray-brown eyes. She carries herself with an unusual stillness, placing most of her weight on the balls of her feet as though ready to step away from danger or toward it. Her noble clothing is well made but plainly altered for travel, with the embroidered cuffs carefully repaired by hand. Her voice is soft and low, almost soothing when calm, but her breathing becomes quick and audible whenever her magic stirs. A faint warmth gathers around her hands when she is frightened or angry.
Mannerisms
When waiting, Mirei stands with one foot slightly forward and rests her fingers against the seam of her sleeve. She speaks carefully and rarely interrupts, but when rattled she inhales sharply through her nose and begins counting under her breath in groups of three.
Personality
Mirei is observant, restrained, and unfailingly courteous, even when frightened. She notices who is being ignored in a room and quietly shifts attention toward them. She is more comfortable solving practical problems than receiving praise, and she has a dry, understated sense of humor that appears only after she trusts someone. Though her weak force of personality makes formal charm difficult, her sincerity can be unexpectedly persuasive.
Ideals
Responsibility. Privilege is a debt, not a reward. Anyone born into comfort owes protection to those who were not.
Bonds
I will protect my younger brother, who is being groomed to inherit a family that does not understand him. I also carry my mother's signet ring and refuse to let my family's name become an excuse for cruelty.
Flaws
I become rigid and defensive when I feel embarrassed, then make decisions designed to restore my dignity rather than solve the problem. I also assume that if I explain a rule carefully enough, people will obey it.

Background
Mirei Valen was born into a minor human noble house whose influence rested less on armies than on contracts, marriages, and the careful exchange of favors. She was expected to become a polished representative of the family, but courtly lessons never suited her. She remembered every detail of a conversation yet stumbled over compliments, and she preferred studying old family records to attending dances. Her strange talent first appeared during a dispute over an inheritance, when a burst of invisible force sent a silver platter spinning across the room and silenced everyone present. The family quietly sent Mirei to a reclusive tutor who suspected a draconic bloodline hidden several generations back in the Valen family. Mirei learned that her power was real, but control did not come naturally. Her spells respond more readily to instinct than confidence, which is unfortunate for someone whose family trained her to hide uncertainty behind perfect manners. After a second magical outburst damaged an ancestral gallery, Mirei left home with her signet ring, a small purse, and a promise to return only when she understood what she had inherited. She now travels as a reluctant emissary of her house, gathering experience, protecting people who cannot buy protection, and trying to prove that nobility is more than the ability to make others obey.
