Appearance
James is a broad-shouldered human man with close-cropped dark hair, pale skin, and a narrow scar crossing his left eyebrow. His gray eyes are constantly alert, as if listening for something beyond the edge of hearing. He wears battered chain mail beneath a weather-stained military coat, carries a longsword and shield, and keeps his old soldier's insignia sewn inside his collar rather than displayed openly.
Mannerisms
James speaks in short, precise sentences and rarely raises his voice. He checks every door twice, counts exits whenever he enters a room, and touches the inside of his collar before answering difficult questions. When the air grows unnaturally still, he stops breathing for several seconds to listen.
Personality
Reserved, observant, and intensely dependable, James prefers practical action over conversation. He notices small changes in posture, sound, and surroundings, but he is uncomfortable with emotional displays. Though stern and formal, he quietly protects frightened people and shows unexpected gentleness toward anyone who reminds him of the soldiers he failed to save.
Ideals
Order. Fear is contagious, and only discipline prevents the frightened from becoming dangerous. James will uphold laws and commands when they protect people, but he has little patience for chaos disguised as freedom.
Bonds
He carries the broken insignia of his lost regiment and will risk his life to discover what happened to the soldiers who vanished in the fog.
Flaws
James obeys rules long after they have ceased to be reasonable. He distrusts comfort, avoids discussing his guilt, and sometimes treats innocent people as potential threats because he believes danger always announces itself too late.
Quirks
Background
James served as a disciplined infantryman in a human border regiment, where his strength and quick reflexes made him an effective shield bearer and close-quarters fighter. He was not a celebrated officer, nor did he seek glory. His commanders valued him because he followed orders, remembered details, and kept moving when others froze. During a patrol through an abandoned settlement, James and his unit encountered a wall of unnatural fog. The town beyond it was silent, ash-gray, and filled with distant sirens that no one else could explain. Only James returned. He emerged days later with his uniform stained by soot and rust, carrying the regiment's broken insignia and refusing to describe what happened inside. Since then, he has traveled from place to place, following rumors of towns swallowed by fog, abandoned hospitals, and places where guilt seems to take physical form. He believes the strange settlement was not merely a haunting, but a judgment. James now seeks the truth with the same grim discipline he once brought to military service, prepared to obey the law when it is just, and to enforce order when fear threatens to consume everyone around him.
“He was not a celebrated officer, nor did he seek glory.”
