Appearance
Gaku Terek is a broad-shouldered human with a compact, powerful build shaped by years of hauling wood, climbing ravines, and traveling under heavy packs. His black hair is kept in a severe, uneven topknot bound with red cord, while the rest is cropped close for practicality. He has warm brown skin, dark eyes, and a weathered face that is more stern than handsome. Within moments of meeting him, people notice his hands, thick-knuckled and heavily callused, with split nails and permanent dark stains from ash, leather oil, and pine resin. He keeps his beard short and carefully combed, a small point of vanity amid otherwise battered clothing.
Mannerisms
Gaku pauses before answering difficult questions, rubbing resin into the grooves of his knuckles. He studies exits, slopes, and tree lines while speaking. When angered, he becomes quieter rather than louder, and when pleased, he gives a single firm nod as though approving a well-made tool.
Personality
Gaku is patient, observant, and quietly protective. He speaks plainly, dislikes wasteful bravado, and has a dry sense of humor that appears only after he trusts someone. He treats every campfire as a temporary village and every injured traveler as a responsibility. In battle, his restraint burns away into focused, bear-like violence, but afterward he is the first to bind wounds and repair broken gear.
Ideals
Strength exists to shelter the vulnerable. The wilderness is not cruel for being dangerous, but people are responsible for what they choose to do with their power.
Bonds
The survivors of the northern caravan are his responsibility, especially the children he carried out of the pass. He will risk almost anything to protect them and to restore the forgotten trail that once connected their homes.
Flaws
Gaku believes endurance excuses too much. He keeps moving long after rest would be wiser, dismisses pain as an inconvenience, and becomes dangerously stubborn when someone suggests abandoning a difficult rescue or pursuit.
Quirks
Background
Gaku Terek was born in a human logging settlement at the edge of a vast mountain forest. His family made their living guiding caravans through high passes, but Gaku preferred the older paths, the ones used by hunters, exiles, and animals. As a boy, he learned to read broken branches, distant bird calls, and the subtle changes in wind that warned of rockslides. By adulthood, he could cross three valleys with no road beneath his feet and return carrying enough game to feed a work crew. His life changed when a winter caravan vanished in the northern passes. Gaku found the survivors days later, trapped beneath a collapsed shelf of stone. He freed them by hand, one slab at a time, then carried the injured through the snow while a white bear followed at a distance. He came to regard that bear as a sign from the wild, not a tame companion but a reminder that endurance was not the same as cruelty. Since then, Gaku has followed the path of the Totem Warrior, calling on the bear's strength when rage rises in him. He now travels beyond the forest as a guide, guard, and occasional problem solver, seeking the people who caused the collapse and the lost route that led to it.
