Appearance
Kestak is a lean, long-limbed human with a soldier's economical posture and a druid's weathered attention to the living world. His dark brown hair is kept short at the sides and tied back at the crown with a strip of green cloth. He has a broad, strong jaw and slightly crowded front teeth, which show whenever he eats quickly or gives a rare, abrupt laugh. Before speaking, he usually pauses to draw a quiet breath through his nose, as though measuring the air for smoke, rain, or blood. His field-worn leather armor is stained green at the seams, and small bundles of dried fern, reed, and pine resin hang from his belt.
Mannerisms
Before speaking, he pauses and inhales through his nose. He checks doors, windows, and tree lines without seeming to look. When eating, he bites with quick, precise movements, and his crowded front teeth become visible when he laughs unexpectedly.
Personality
Kestak is controlled, observant, and quietly protective. He speaks in concise tactical phrases, notices practical details others miss, and shows affection by repairing gear, checking rations, or taking the most dangerous watch. Although stern at first meeting, he has a dry sense of humor and an unexpected tenderness toward injured animals and frightened recruits.
Ideals
Duty. A protector's first responsibility is to stand where danger is greatest, even when nobody will praise him for it.
Bonds
The forest of Vezhka is his homeland, his first command, and the people he swore to protect. He carries Odrik's cracked wooden field whistle and intends to return it only after learning why the old druid vanished.
Flaws
Kestak treats hesitation as a moral failure and can become controlling when frightened. He has difficulty accepting help, especially from people who have never served, and secretly believes that if he plans carefully enough, no one under his protection will ever die.
Quirks
Background
Kestak was born in the deep forest of Vezhka, where human villages stand on raised timber paths above blackwater pools and every child learns which birds fall silent when strangers approach. He grew up among wardens who guarded the forest borders, but he was not naturally gifted at reading spirits or soothing animals. His talent was for maps, logistics, and remembering every path he had ever walked. When raiders and logging crews pushed into Vezhka, Kestak joined the forest infantry, carrying a spear beneath the boughs and serving as a pathfinder, quartermaster, and disciplined line soldier. During a disastrous winter campaign, Kestak discovered that the forest was not merely territory to defend. The roots had shifted beneath abandoned trenches, wounded trees had grown around broken weapons, and the old druid circles had begun answering the soldiers' fear with storms and thorn walls. An aging druid named Odrik taught Kestak to listen before commanding. Kestak eventually took up the staff and sickle, learning that protection could mean tending a sapling, redirecting a flood, or standing in the mud while everyone else escaped. He still thinks like an infantryman, forming plans in ranks and contingencies, but now his regiment is the forest itself, and he has left Vezhka to prevent distant powers from turning other wild places into battlefields.
