Appearance
Balloubé is a compact halfling with a weathered, broad-shouldered build, sun-browned skin, and a cropped mop of dark hair usually hidden under a battered soldier’s helm. He wears a scarred mail shirt under practical travel leathers, with a faded insignia of rank pinned proudly to his chest. His grin is quick, feral, and disarming, like a tavern trickster who could just as easily split a shield with an axe.
Mannerisms
He speaks softly until anger hits, then his voice turns bright and formal, like a sergeant giving battlefield orders. When he is thinking, he taps two fingers against his insignia of rank, and when amused he snorts through his nose before he laughs. He tends to crouch rather than sit, as if ready to spring into motion at any moment.
Personality
Balloubé is brash, loyal, and unexpectedly tender toward anyone overlooked by bigger powers. He treats danger like a problem that can be argued with, then solved by force if necessary. He likes clear plans, honest pay, and a worthy fight, but he hates cruelty disguised as discipline.
Ideals
Freedom, but not the freedom of the strong to trample the weak. Balloubé believes true liberty means making sure ordinary people can travel, work, and live without bowing to bullies, warlords, or cowardly officers.
Bonds
He keeps his insignia of rank as a promise to the squadmates who did not make it home, and he refuses to let their names be forgotten. He is fiercely protective of travelers, scouts, and anyone forced to survive on the edges of a bigger power’s war.
Flaws
He confuses authority with competence, then overcorrects by challenging every rank badge he sees. When anger takes hold, he can become so eager to prove a point that he risks himself for dramatic effect. He also keeps too many souvenirs of battle, because letting go feels uncomfortably like forgetting.
Quirks
Background
Balloubé was born to a nomadic halfling family that survived by moving faster than trouble and laughing at it louder. That changed when a border war swept through the roads his people traveled. He was first hired as a messenger, then pressed into service as a scout, and finally earned a soldier’s rank by doing the one thing his superiors valued most, getting smaller people and slower people out alive. He learned to fight with a greataxe almost comically large in his hands, and found that when fear rose in him, the world seemed to sharpen. His courage was not the disciplined sort. It was the kind that came from choosing, again and again, to stand between danger and someone weaker than himself. After the war, he could not go back to a quiet life. The barracks had taught him drill, loyalty, and how to read a battlefield like a map, but they had also taught him how quickly banners become graves. Balloubé left with his insignia, a trophy taken from a fallen enemy, and a stubborn belief that no authority deserves obedience unless it protects the helpless. He now wanders as a free blade, half veteran and half whirlwind, taking jobs that let him break tyrants, defend caravans, and remind larger folk that courage is not measured in height.
