Appearance
Khaerik is a lean, long-limbed kenku with charcoal-black feathers, silver-gray eyes, and a narrow scar running from the left side of his beak toward his cheek. He wears weathered leather armor beneath a dark green cloak, with a longbow and quiver across his back. Several bright metal tokens hang from cords around his neck, each marked with a symbol from a different military unit. His movements are quick and birdlike, but his posture becomes rigidly disciplined whenever danger appears.
Mannerisms
Khaerik tilts his head sharply when listening, clicks his beak when thinking, and unconsciously scans every doorway and rooftop. He often answers questions in borrowed voices before correcting himself in his own rough, rasping tone.
Personality
Observant, dryly humorous, and intensely protective of companions. Khaerik speaks little in his natural voice, preferring carefully selected sounds, commands, and fragments gathered from people he has known. He is patient around frightened animals and children, but becomes cold and formal when confronted by bullies or abusive commanders.
Ideals
Freedom. No soldier should be treated as expendable property. Orders matter, but conscience matters more.
Bonds
Khaerik carries the regiment's final command token and intends to discover who betrayed his soldiers. He protects deserters, refugees, and other survivors of the border war whenever he can.
Flaws
Khaerik assumes every organization contains a traitor and every order hides a second meaning. He is slow to trust sincere kindness, and when frightened he may repeat a command in the voice of a dead officer instead of speaking in his own.
Quirks
Background
Khaerik served as a scout and courier in a border regiment whose commanders valued his ability to move silently and reproduce voices with uncanny accuracy. He learned to imitate officers, sentries, and battlefield signals, turning his natural kenku mimicry into a practical military art. During a disastrous retreat through a burned valley, Khaerik was ordered to carry a sealed message to a distant fortress. The message never arrived because the regiment was betrayed from within, and Khaerik returned to find his unit scattered and officially listed as dead.
