Appearance
A compact, broad-shouldered dwarf with iron-gray hair braided close to the scalp and a carefully trimmed beard bound with plain copper rings. Ruzhena moves with deliberate economy, favoring neither foot and wasting no motion. Within a minute of meeting her, most people notice that she rarely looks directly at faces. Her attention travels instead to door hinges, floor seams, inscriptions, weapon grips, and the wear patterns on other people's boots. Her chain shirt is patched with scraps of annotated parchment beneath the links, and her holy symbol is a small stone tablet etched with a constantly revised prayer.
Mannerisms
Ruzhena traces the edge of her holy symbol with one thumb while thinking. She pauses before entering any room to study its thresholds, then quietly names the direction of the nearest stone wall. When annoyed, she straightens nearby objects into precise parallel lines.
Personality
Quiet, observant, and intensely courteous, Ruzhena treats every conversation as a source of evidence. She is patient with ignorance but not with careless certainty. Her kindness appears in practical forms, repairing a strap, labeling a medicine, remembering someone's preferred tea, or standing watch so another person can sleep. She speaks slowly when discussing faith and very quickly when describing an inscription.
Ideals
Truth is a form of shelter. A fact preserved honestly can protect people who will never know who saved them.
Bonds
The archive that raised me is built over a sealed chamber, and I will return with the knowledge needed to open it safely. I also owe my former mentor the truth about the tablet that cost her life.
Flaws
I cannot leave a mystery partially solved, even when solving it is dangerous, impolite, or plainly less urgent than helping the person in front of me. I also become cold and defensive when someone treats history as decoration rather than responsibility.
Quirks
Background
Ruzhena Vostrik was raised in a deep dwarf archive where every family was expected to contribute not only labor, but memory. Her first lessons were in stone grades, burial inscriptions, and the old agreements between dwarven clans and the powers beneath the mountains. She became a traveling sage after discovering that several supposedly unrelated historical tablets shared the same missing phrase. She spent years trading repairs, translations, and patient cataloguing for access to monasteries, manor libraries, and abandoned observatories. The deeper her research went, the more often the missing phrase appeared beside accounts of miracles, underground tremors, and a nameless divine presence described only as the Listener in Stone. Her studies eventually became prayer. Ruzhena does not claim certainty about which god answers her, only that something ancient responds when she places her palm against a wall and asks the right question. A temple recognized her gift and ordained her as a cleric, though she remains more comfortable among shelves and inscriptions than before an altar. She now travels to locate the scattered pieces of a broken historical record, believing that the truth may reveal why the Listener has begun sending warnings through the foundations of settlements. She carries a scholar's tools, a priest's symbol, and the uneasy conviction that some histories were erased for the safety of the living.
