Appearance
Nero is a lean, quick-moving tiefling with deep wine-red skin, swept-back black hair, and polished black horns that curve close to his temples. His amber eyes are alert and amused, while his long tail often rests in a loose curve around one ankle when he stands still. He carries himself with a relaxed forward lean, as if perpetually prepared to step into motion. His hands are ink-stained around the fingertips from forgery work, and his well-maintained clothing combines a dark leather coat, a crimson waistcoat, narrow trousers, and soft-soled boots. Within a minute of meeting him, most people notice that he never fully settles his weight, shifting subtly from foot to foot while studying the room.
Mannerisms
Nero smiles slightly whenever someone makes a threat, then glances at their hands instead of their face. He rolls a coin across his knuckles while thinking, taps twice on any locked surface before opening it, and gives people a different harmless nickname each time he meets them.
Personality
Nero is quick-witted, theatrically polite, and observant to an unsettling degree. He treats conversation like a card game, remembering tiny details and using them to make people feel understood. Beneath the charm is a guarded man who wants to trust others but has learned that trust is often sold as a luxury. He prefers helping from the shadows, then accepting credit only if it will make the next rescue easier.
Ideals
Freedom. No law, title, temple, or contract should have the power to decide who deserves dignity. People should be judged by what they do when they hold power over someone else.
Bonds
Nero protects the people of his old river district, especially his mother, who believes he is still working as a respectable document clerk. He also carries the original ledger that exposed the criminal syndicate, and he intends to bring its surviving leaders to justice.
Flaws
Nero cannot resist improving a lie, even when the truth would serve him better. He assumes every offer has a hidden hook, and when frightened, he becomes glib, evasive, and impossible to pin down. He is also too willing to risk himself for strangers if doing so lets him feel like the hero of a story he controls.
Quirks
Background
Nero was born in a crowded river district where tiefling children learned early that people often judged the shape of their horns before listening to their words. His mother earned a modest living repairing ledgers and seals for merchants, while his absent father left behind nothing but a talent for dramatic entrances and carefully chosen lies. Nero discovered that a forged signature could open a locked door more quietly than a crowbar, and that a well-timed joke could make suspicion feel insulting to the person who held it. For several years, Nero traveled under the name Master Corvin Vale, posing as a minor nobleman's agent, a licensed relic broker, and once, very briefly, a priest of a god he had never worshiped. Most of his schemes targeted exploitative lenders, corrupt officials, and merchants who profited from famine. His luck changed when one forged inheritance document exposed a powerful criminal syndicate, forcing Nero to abandon his identity and flee with only his tools, weapons, and a list of people who had been cheated by the same organization. He now works as a rogue because stealth, precision, and information let him help others without asking permission from institutions he does not trust. He keeps lying for good causes, but he has begun to wonder whether a person can wear too many names without losing track of the one underneath.
