Appearance
Virgil is an average-height water genasi male with greyish hair that often appears damp, as though touched by sea mist. His light purple eyes shimmer like moonlight beneath deep water, and faint blue-green undertones show through his otherwise human-like skin. He has a lean, disciplined build, callused hands, and a calm posture shaped by years aboard ships and in monastic training. He wears practical sailor's clothing beneath a simple monk's sash, with a shortsword and belaying pin at his side.
Mannerisms
He pauses before answering difficult questions, listening as though judging the rhythm of distant waves. When anxious, he rubs his thumb across the face of his brass compass and unconsciously matches his breathing to the rise and fall of the tide.
Personality
Virgil is patient, observant, and unfailingly courteous, especially toward laborers, sailors, and strangers in distress. He speaks in a calm, measured voice and dislikes boasting, waste, and needless cruelty. Although his intelligence is sharp and his memory excellent, he often appears distant while studying people and situations. Beneath his composed exterior is a strong protective instinct and a dry, understated sense of humor.
Ideals
Discipline. The sea is merciless to the careless, and so is life. Through patience, duty, and self-control, even overwhelming forces can be guided toward good.
Bonds
He is fiercely loyal to the crew of the vessel that raised him and will risk himself to protect sailors, passengers, and castaways. He also carries a small brass compass that belonged to the cabin boy whose death changed his life.
Flaws
Virgil becomes rigid and judgmental when others ignore rules that he believes protect lives. He also hides his fear of failing someone under his protection, sometimes taking reckless responsibility rather than trusting his companions.
Quirks
Background
Virgil Artois was born during a violent storm far from shore, when his mother's vessel nearly broke apart against a reef. The crew later said that the sea itself seemed to cradle the infant until the storm passed. As he grew, Virgil became a capable deckhand, navigator's assistant, and swimmer, though his quiet patience and unusual ability to remain motionless in rough seas made some sailors uneasy. He learned early that survival aboard a ship depended on discipline, careful listening, and respect for forces greater than oneself. After an accident cost the life of a young cabin boy, Virgil became convinced that strength without control was simply another kind of danger. He left the sea temporarily and trained at a secluded monastery built beside a tidal cavern. There, he learned to turn breath, balance, and measured motion into martial discipline. He has returned to the open waters as both sailor and monk, seeking to protect travelers, expose those who exploit the helpless, and master the turbulent power within his elemental heritage. He still longs for the sea, but now regards every voyage as a test of composure and moral purpose.
