Features
10 featuresBonus action
- Shadow CommandLevel 1
Kettig can manipulate nearby dim light and darkness as an extension of their body. As a bonus action, they can cause one unattended shadow within 30 feet to lengthen, shorten, or shift up to 10 feet until the start of their next turn. This movement cannot carry objects, deal damage, or create total cover. Kettig can use this feature a number of times equal to their proficiency bonus, and regain all expended uses after a long rest.
- Traitshadow beingShadow Affinity, Kettig has resistance to necrotic damage and can extinguish one nonmagical flame within 10 feet as a bonus action.
Always on
- Command the Shade
When Bonus action, while a usable shadow is within 30 feet.
Kettig shifts a nearby unattended shadow up to 10 feet, creating a distraction or subtly changing the angle of darkness.
- Umbral StepLevel 1
When Action, while Kettig is in dim light or darkness.
Kettig vanishes into dimness and reappears within 20 feet in another area of dim light or darkness.
- Paid in Pain
When Action, when attacking a valid target.
Kettig makes a dagger attack or light crossbow attack, then adds Contract Strike damage when its conditions are met.
- Contract StrikeLevel 1
Kettig is trained to exploit concealment. Once per turn, when they hit a creature with an attack while they have advantage on the attack roll or when an ally is within 5 feet of the target, they deal an extra 1d4 psychic damage. Kettig cannot use this feature if they have disadvantage on the attack roll.
- Traitshadow beingDarkvision, Kettig can see in dim light within 60 feet as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. They cannot discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.
- Traitshadow beingUmbral Form, Kettig can squeeze through a space as narrow as 1 inch wide without squeezing, provided the space is not brightly illuminated. They have advantage on checks made to escape a grapple while in dim light or darkness.
- Traitshadow beingLiving Silhouette, Kettig does not need to eat, drink, or breathe, but must remain motionless in dim light or darkness for at least 4 hours to gain the benefits of a long rest.
- Mercenary Lifemercanary
Kettig can identify common mercenary companies, recognize the insignia and customs of soldiers for hire, and secure modest lodging or employment among military camps, caravan guards, and veteran circles. Such contacts are not automatically loyal, but they usually understand the value of a paid introduction.

Appearance
Kettig appears as a tall, narrow humanoid formed from dense charcoal darkness, with faint violet light where facial features should be. A heavy gray cloak hangs from the figure's shoulders, its hem constantly dissolving into wisps that crawl across the ground. The cloak is carefully brushed and repaired at the collar, while the left pocket is visibly polished smooth from years of being rubbed and checked. Kettig wears a bronze contract token on a cord around the neck, and the metal is worn nearly flat from constant handling. Their movements are precise, economical, and slightly delayed, as if their shadow decides where they will stand a heartbeat before they do.
Mannerisms
Kettig pauses before answering, allowing their shadow to move first. They smooth the cloak collar whenever someone mentions money, tap the bronze contract token three times before accepting a job, and stand with their back to the darkest available wall.
Personality
Kettig is dryly polite, observant, and relentlessly practical. They ask what a task is worth before asking whether it is dangerous. Beneath the mercenary exterior is a being fascinated by small acts of trust, especially gifts given without negotiation. Kettig rarely laughs, but they collect jokes from every company they work with and repeat them later in an unsettlingly accurate imitation of the speaker.
Ideals
Everything has a price. The only unforgivable sin is pretending that a debt does not exist.
Bonds
The sealed ledger hidden inside Kettig's cloak is worth more than any weapon. They will recover every unpaid soldier's due, even if the debt must be collected from a lord.
Flaws
Kettig treats every kindness as a negotiation tactic and every promise as a trap. They will abandon a morally sound plan if they believe the agreed price has become unfair, and they cannot resist checking whether someone has hidden a second contract clause.
Quirks
Background
Kettig formed beneath the floorboards of a burned counting house, where the shadows of ledgers, locked chests, and dead merchants had pooled together after a failed raid. The mercenaries who found the living darkness did not destroy it. Instead, they taught Kettig the language of contracts, the habits of sentries, and the practical truth that most loyalties last only until someone offers more coin. Kettig learned to wear a cloak because people trusted a covered shape more readily than a naked silhouette, and because the garment gave their body a fixed outline in bright places. For several years, Kettig served as a scout, saboteur, and retrieval specialist for competing companies. Their shadow could stretch beneath doors, clutch a dropped key, and fold two nearby dim spaces into a brief passage. A disastrous contract changed everything. Kettig was paid to open a portal for a retreating unit, but the employer withheld the final payment and abandoned the soldiers on the other side. Kettig completed the escape anyway, then took the employer's sealed ledger instead of the promised gold. The ledger contains names, debts, and evidence that powerful commanders have been purchasing wars under false banners. Kettig now sells their services to anyone with sufficient coin, while quietly charging extra whenever a contract might expose the people who betrayed them.
“The mercenaries who found the living darkness did not destroy it.”
