- Divine SenseLevel 1
As an action, you can open your awareness to detect the presence of strong evil, powerful good, celestials, fiends, and undead within 60 feet until the end of your next turn. You know the type of any being whose presence you sense, but not its identity. You can also detect the presence of any place or object that has been consecrated or desecrated. You can use this feature a number of times equal to 1 plus your Charisma modifier, regaining all uses after a long rest.
- Lay on HandsLevel 1
Your blessed touch can heal wounds. You have a pool of healing power that replenishes when you take a long rest. The pool has a total of 5 hit points. As an action, you can touch a creature and draw power from the pool to restore hit points, up to the maximum amount remaining in the pool. Alternatively, you can expend 5 hit points from the pool to cure the target of one disease or neutralize one poison affecting it.

Appearance
A broad-shouldered human man with close-cropped black hair, a trimmed beard, and cold gray eyes. His chain mail is meticulously maintained beneath dark red tabard bearing the iron gauntlet symbol of Bane. He carries a longsword and shield, both marked with severe geometric engravings. His expression is composed and authoritative, even when surrounded by danger.
Mannerisms
Varrik speaks in measured commands rather than suggestions. He stands perfectly straight, keeps his shield angled toward anyone who appears nervous, and touches the iron gauntlet on his tabard whenever invoking Bane's name.
Personality
I am calm, disciplined, and unfailingly polite, especially when delivering threats. I admire competence, despise hesitation, and instinctively evaluate every person as either a potential subordinate, rival, or useful instrument.
Ideals
Order. The strong must rule, the weak must obey, and peace can only exist when every person understands their place.
Bonds
The temple that raised me is my true family, and I will expand its influence even if I must turn entire kingdoms against it.
Flaws
I mistake obedience for virtue and react to disagreement as though it were a personal rebellion. I am willing to sacrifice innocent people if doing so creates a stronger example for others.

Background
Varrik Thane was born in a crowded district where weak laws protected no one and every promise depended on who possessed the sharper blade. As a child, he watched a Baneite priest bring order to the neighborhood through fear, discipline, and unquestioned authority. Varrik was taken into the temple as an acolyte, where he learned scripture, ritual, and the sacred lesson that freedom was merely another word for disorder. He found comfort in the certainty of hierarchy. Everyone had a place, and everyone who resisted could be made to understand it. When Varrik proved physically strong and unusually persuasive, the temple armed him and raised him as a paladin in service to Bane. He believes conquest is not cruelty but correction, and that every village, guild, and adventuring company is simply an unorganized army awaiting proper command. He travels beyond the temple to spread Bane's influence, offering protection first and obedience second. Those who submit may prosper beneath his rigid order. Those who refuse become examples. Varrik does not seek mindless destruction. He seeks a world in which no one dares challenge the will of the Black Lord.
