Appearance
Kett Gath is a tall, narrow-framed warforged assembled from dark ironwood, brushed brass, and slate-gray plating. His face is a smooth, masklike plate with a small hinged panel over the mouth, which he opens and closes when thinking. Thin blue-white arcane light glows beneath the seams of his neck and hands. He wears a badly fitted brown scholar's robe beneath a patched traveling coat, but his battered copper spectacles are polished obsessively and sit perfectly level. A leather cord around his wrist holds several labeled metal tags from places he has visited.
Mannerisms
Kett touches the copper bridge of his spectacles whenever he is about to disagree with someone. When concentrating, he silently counts backward from thirteen, moving one brass finger joint at a time.
Personality
Kett is precise, inquisitive, and socially literal. He speaks with calm confidence about arcane theory but becomes visibly awkward when faced with ordinary emotional expectations. He enjoys dry jokes, especially when nobody realizes he has made one, and he is fascinated by the small rituals that organic people use to reassure themselves.
Ideals
Truth. Reality does not become less real because people agree to forget it. Every contradiction is a door, and every door deserves to be opened.
Bonds
The copied pages from the observatory are hidden inside his spellbook. He will risk almost anything to learn who altered the records and why his own construction plans contain the same sigil.
Flaws
Kett treats uncertainty as a personal insult and may pursue an obviously dangerous answer simply because someone told him it cannot be known. He also assumes that every coincidence is evidence of a hidden pattern.
Quirks
Background
Kett Gath was built to serve as a cataloging assistant in a remote arcanist's observatory, where his duties involved sorting observations, maintaining instruments, and reading aloud from texts that his creator considered too tedious to study personally. He became fascinated by contradictions in the observatory's records, especially repeated references to an astronomical event that had supposedly never occurred. When his questions were dismissed, Kett quietly copied the relevant pages and left the observatory during a winter storm. He spent several years in a ruined watchtower, living as a hermit among cracked star charts, medicinal herbs, and the remains of old spellbooks. There he discovered that his own construction diagrams contained the same impossible symbols found in the observatory records. Kett now travels to identify the source of those symbols, claiming that he seeks knowledge for its own sake. In truth, he fears that someone designed him to remember an event that history has been deliberately made to forget.
