Appearance
A weathered human woman of average height with a compact, powerful frame built through years of marching and hard labor. Her brown hair is cropped close on one side and braided on the other, with a pale scar running from her left temple to her cheek. She wears battered military leathers beneath a red wool cloak, and her hands are covered in old calluses. Her eyes are gray and steady, her expression stern but never cruel.
Mannerisms
Mara stands whenever someone enters a room, checks the nearest window before sitting, and taps two fingers against her wrist whenever she is counting down to action. She addresses companions by their full names when worried and by rank or nickname when relaxed.
Personality
Mara is disciplined, direct, and quietly compassionate. She speaks little in crowds, but notices who has not eaten, who is favoring an injury, and which door has the weakest hinge. She dislikes boasting and distrusts anyone who treats violence as entertainment. Beneath her stern military habits is a patient woman who repairs children's toys, remembers the names of stable animals, and believes every frightened person deserves one calm voice nearby.
Ideals
Duty is measured by whom it protects, not by whom it obeys. The strong are responsible for making sure the powerless survive.
Bonds
The survivors of her old company are her family. She will cross a kingdom to rescue one of them, and she carries the unit's cracked bronze standard as a reminder that no soldier should be abandoned.
Flaws
She obeys clear orders too readily when lives are at stake, even after experience has taught her that authority can be corrupt. Mara also has a deep discomfort with retreat, and sometimes mistakes survival for cowardice until someone she trusts forces her to reconsider.
Quirks
Background
Mara Venn was raised in a frontier garrison where every child learned to mend tack, carry water, and recognize the sound of an approaching army. She enlisted young, not because she loved war, but because the soldiers were the only people standing between her village and the raiders who had burned it twice. Mara proved stubborn, reliable, and impossible to frighten into abandoning a post. Her officers called her an unremarkable fighter until the night her unit was trapped in a mountain pass. With the enemy closing in and the evacuation route blocked, Mara entered a battle fury that turned exhaustion into motion and fear into a weapon. She held the pass long enough for the wounded to escape, then carried her captain three miles through a blizzard. Years later, Mara left the army after refusing an order that would have sacrificed civilians for a tactical advantage. Her discharge was honorable, but her name became inconvenient in certain command tents. She now travels as a protector, taking contracts only when the helpless are not being treated as expendable assets. She still keeps military discipline, still counts exits, and still sleeps lightly, but she has learned that loyalty to law means nothing when law is used to excuse cruelty. Her rage is not wild in the ordinary sense. It is the terrifying force of a woman who has chosen exactly what she will defend.
