Appearance

Anot is a broad-shouldered hill dwarf with iron-gray hair braided into two short temple locks and a neatly trimmed beard threaded with blue prayer cords. His weathered face bears a pale scar across the left cheek, earned while shielding a shrine from raiders. He wears a chain shirt beneath dark clerical robes, a sturdy shield painted with a silver mountain, and a mace whose head is engraved with a line of dwarven liturgy. His eyes are calm and observant, though they sharpen whenever he hears an oath broken.

Mannerisms

Anot touches the silver mountain on his shield before making a difficult decision. He pauses to straighten crooked objects on tables and begins formal prayers with a quiet tap of his mace against the floor.

Personality

Quiet, attentive, and dependable, Anot prefers careful observation to quick judgment. He speaks plainly, keeps meticulous records, and offers comfort through practical help rather than sentimental speeches. He has a dry sense of humor that appears most often when everyone else is too frightened to laugh.

Ideals

Mercy must be made tangible. Faith is not proven by what one says in safety, but by whom one protects when the stones begin to fall.

Bonds

The ruined shrine where his divine calling first manifested must be rebuilt, stone by stone, and Anot will not allow its sacred relic to be lost.

Flaws

Anot is rigid about promises and procedures, sometimes valuing a proper ritual over an urgent practical solution. He is slow to forgive betrayal and secretly fears that, without the structure of his faith, he will discover he has no wisdom of his own.

Quirks

Counts his breaths during stressful moments, then converts the count into a short prayer.
Keeps a pebble from every place where someone was rescued or protected.
Refuses to step over books, tools, or weapons lying on the ground.
Writes down the final words of anyone who dies in his presence.

Background

Anot was raised among the stone halls of a mountain monastery where every prayer was recorded in ink, every relic was cataloged, and every promise was expected to endure as long as the foundations beneath the temple. As a young acolyte, he proved more patient than eloquent. He struggled with scripture recitation and diplomatic sermons, but he could listen to a grieving miner for hours and remember every detail. The elders eventually recognized that his faith was not made for grand speeches. It was made for standing beside people when their courage failed. When a cave-in destroyed an isolated shrine, Anot joined the rescue effort despite orders to remain behind and protect the monastery's sacred archives. He found survivors trapped beneath a collapsed sanctuary and spent three days keeping them calm, tending wounds, and reciting prayers by touch in total darkness. His devotion awakened into divine power, and the stones themselves seemed to answer his call. Since then, Anot has traveled beyond the mountain, carrying his order's teachings to places where law has become cruelty or where the weak have been forgotten. He believes every life is a foundation worth reinforcing, even when the person beneath the rubble insists they are beyond saving.
