Appearance
A lean human man with an easy grin, sharp hazel eyes, and dark hair usually tied back with a silver cord. He dresses in elegant but slightly worn finery, favoring deep reds and black gloves, with a dragon-shaped signet ring that he rubs when thinking. His posture is relaxed in a way that suggests confidence, but his gaze is always measuring exits, faces, and weak points.
Mannerisms
He speaks softly until he wants to be heard, then suddenly sounds as if the room has been listening to him all along. When nervous, he adjusts his gloves and rehearses names under his breath. He rarely sits with his back to a door and always watches hands more than faces.
Personality
Charming, nimble-minded, and just a little theatrical, Ilyas enjoys turning a tense moment into a performance. He is generous with wit, stingy with trust, and deeply offended by bad taste. Beneath the polish, he is curious and surprisingly protective of ordinary people who are being cheated by larger powers.
Ideals
Freedom. No king, temple, or law should own a person's name, future, or story. A clever soul deserves the right to reinvent himself whenever the old life becomes too small.
Bonds
He keeps a sealed packet of forged papers for a person he once betrayed, and he will not destroy it until he can make amends.
Flaws
He cannot resist improvising a lie when a simple truth would serve, especially if the lie makes him look clever. He also assumes every friendship has an angle, so when someone is sincere with him he often misses it until too late.
Quirks
Background
Ilyas Vale was born on the edge of a merchant road to a family that survived by selling whatever story the season required. His father taught him how to read a room, his mother taught him how to smile through a lie, and neither of them ever stayed in one town long enough to be caught. The first time Ilyas panicked, sorcery answered for him. A lantern burst into silver flame, the guards hesitated, and a simple lie became a miracle. He learned quickly that people forgive the impossible when it flatters them. By his twenties, Ilyas had become a polished fraud, a maker of noble cousins, forgotten heirs, and miracle healers with carefully staged signs from the heavens. The draconic spark in his veins only made the act easier, since his magic seemed to enjoy performance as much as he did. He is not cruel, exactly, but he believes honesty is just another costume people wear when the occasion demands it. Now he travels with a suitcase of false seals, a handful of burnished lies, and a growing fear that one day he will have to decide which of his identities is the real one.
“The first time Ilyas panicked, sorcery answered for him.”
