Appearance

Barnaby is an remarkably thin man with a perpetually damp brow and a hunched posture that suggests he is trying to occupy as little space as possible. His clothes are three sizes too big, gathered with twine and belts. He has straw colored hair that sticks out in odd tufts and watery eyes that dart back and forth in a state of constant, mild panic.

Mannerisms

Barnaby constantly checks behind him for nonexistent pursuers and mumbles to himself about the various ways a current plan could result in his untimely demise.

Personality

Barnaby is the definition of a defeatist who refuses to quit. He is twitchy, apologetic, and has the air of someone who expects a piano to fall on him at any moment. He speaks in a low, stuttering whisper and often apologizes for things that are not his fault, such as the weather or the slow pace of a queue.

Ideals

Persistence. The only way I have ever survived is by not giving up, even when I really, really want to go home and hide under a bed.

Bonds

I owe a substantial debt to a crime boss named Fat Rabbit, and I am terrified of what will happen if I cannot pay him back in gold.

Flaws

I am convinced that everything is going to go wrong, and I often sabotage my own chances because I am waiting for the inevitable failure.

Quirks

Wipes sweaty palms on his pants every thirty seconds
Carries a lucky rabbit foot that looks more like a matted ball of fur
Apologizes to inanimate objects when he bumps into them

Background

Barnaby Thistle was born to a family of exceptional laborers, but he was blessed with none of their strength or coordination. After failing as an apprentice to three different blacksmiths and nearly burning down the local library as a clerk, he found himself desperate and hungry on the streets. He turned to crime out of necessity, though he quickly became known as the most incompetent pickpocket in the city of Neverwinter. Every job he touched ended in disaster, earning him the nickname No-Luck. He survived only through sheer persistence and the occasional intervention of the local Thieves Guild, who found his failures so spectacular that they used him as a comedic distraction for more serious heists. While Barnaby lacks the physical grace of his peers, he has developed a sixth sense for trouble, mostly because trouble is his most frequent companion. He knows he is not the fastest or the strongest, but he has learned how to stay quiet and stay out of sight when things go wrong, which they invariably do. Now venturing out as an adventurer, Barnaby is looking for a crew that is either desperate or distracted enough to let him tag along. He hopes that in the wild, his luck might finally turn, or at the very least, there will be fewer town guards watching his every stumble. He carries his tools with a shaking hand, always ready to try one more time even when the odds are stacked against his meager abilities.
