Appearance
Kivus is a short, narrow-shouldered dwarf with a square face, ash-gray beard, and deep-set brown eyes that magnify his constant scrutiny. His beard is divided into three carefully waxed braids, each threaded with tiny copper rings engraved with dates and citations. He wears a practical gray robe over sturdy travel clothes, carries a rune-marked quarterstaff, and keeps his spellbook secured beneath his arm with a chain and brass clasp.
Mannerisms
Kivus pauses before answering even simple questions, as though consulting an invisible index. He taps his quarterstaff three times whenever he reaches an important conclusion, and he corrects inaccurate terminology under his breath even when no one has asked.
Personality
Kivus is precise, reserved, and intensely curious. He listens more than he speaks, but once a subject touches on ancient history, arcane theory, or dwarven stonework, his restraint gives way to rapid explanations and increasingly elaborate diagrams. He is dutiful toward companions who respect agreements and surprisingly protective of anyone willing to learn.
Ideals
Order. Knowledge becomes useful only when it is recorded, verified, and placed within a reliable system. The world is safer when its truths are preserved by those willing to follow rules.
Bonds
The sealed chamber beneath his childhood settlement must never be opened by someone who does not understand its inscriptions. Kivus carries a rubbing of the first shifting mark and will risk much to protect it.
Flaws
Kivus treats uncertainty as a personal failure and can waste precious time searching for nonexistent proof. He is suspicious of improvisation, dislikes being interrupted, and would rather risk danger than admit that he does not understand something.
Quirks
Background
Kivus was born in a mining settlement whose oldest tunnels were sealed after the discovery of an impossible chamber carved beneath the mountain. The chamber contained no treasure, only a wall covered in geometric marks that shifted whenever torchlight touched them. Fascinated, Kivus devoted himself to recording every alteration. His careful notes attracted the attention of a traveling arcanist, who recognized the markings as fragments of a forgotten magical notation and accepted the young dwarf as an apprentice. Years of study taught Kivus the discipline of wizardry, but not the confidence that usually accompanies it. His intellect is methodical rather than brilliant, and every spell is supported by copied diagrams, cross-referenced footnotes, and at least one contingency plan. He now travels as a researcher and reluctant adventurer, seeking lost archives, ancient masonry, and surviving examples of the shifting script. He believes the sealed chamber is part of a larger system, one designed to regulate forces capable of reshaping the foundations of the world. Kivus intends to understand that system before someone less cautious finds it first.
