Appearance
Skravik is a compact rock gnome with a sharp chin, broad ears, and a narrow face framed by wiry iron-gray hair. His eyes are bright hazel and constantly alert, darting toward exits, pockets, and anything written in an unfamiliar script. He dresses like a modest traveling scholar, wearing a patched blue-gray coat, soft leather gloves, and a belt crowded with pouches, lock picks, chalk, folded scraps of paper, and carefully disguised spell components. His spellbook is covered in meaningless diagrams, false annotations, and copied symbols that he cannot decipher himself.
Mannerisms
Skravik taps the side of his spellbook whenever he is thinking, traces fake annotations with one finger while pretending to read, and pauses before difficult words as if savoring their profundity. He smiles broadly when lying and becomes unusually formal when afraid.
Personality
Skravik is charming, quick-witted, and theatrically confident. He treats every conversation as a performance and every mistake as an opportunity to redirect attention. He is genuinely observant and clever, but his lack of literacy makes him defensive around educated people. Beneath the bravado, he is eager to be respected for something real and is fascinated by anyone who patiently explains written magic without humiliating him.
Ideals
Appearance is a kind of magic. If people believe you are capable, they give you the chance to become capable.
Bonds
The old criminal network that protected him is being squeezed by a ruthless spellcaster. Skravik intends to repay his debts by dismantling the spellcaster's operation, even if it exposes his own secrets.
Flaws
He would rather risk a dangerous lie than admit he cannot read. When cornered, he invents increasingly elaborate explanations for his ignorance and may become hostile toward anyone who asks him to decipher a text.
Quirks
Background
Skravik Brusk was raised in a crowded gnomish workshop district where every neighbor repaired clocks, locks, toys, or one another's mistakes. He had nimble fingers and a remarkably persuasive voice, but letters and numbers slid across the page like ants. Rather than admit he could not read, Skravik began memorizing the shapes of sigils and copying the movements of hedge mages from alleyway performances. He discovered that people often trusted confidence more than competence, especially when the speaker was a gnome with a battered spellbook and an impressive vocabulary of invented arcane terms. His criminal career began with forged permits, disguised messages, and stolen spell components. His talent for deception eventually brought him to a small circle of illicit apprentices who assumed he was secretly brilliant. Skravik maintains the lie by claiming that his unusual method of study requires watching a spell being cast exactly one hundred times. In truth, repeated observation lets him reconstruct a spell through movement, sound, timing, and memory, though the process is painfully slow and unreliable. He currently knows six first-level spells, all learned through years of observation and imitation, and travels as a wizard because the title opens doors that a common thief never could. He is terrified that a real wizard will ask him to read aloud.
