Appearance
Tavren Quetzal is a lean wood elf with warm brown skin, dark copper hair worn in a loose braid, and alert hazel eyes that seem amused even when his face is solemn. He is physically broader and more solid than many elves, with a habit of standing too close and leaning into conversations as if every exchange were a private confidence. His most noticeable feature is his strong jaw and slightly crowded front teeth, which show whenever he laughs, eats, or flashes a deliberately unconvincing smile. He dresses like a traveling priest who has repeatedly sold pieces of his own wardrobe, wearing scale mail beneath layered green and saffron cloth, with a wooden holy symbol tucked beneath his collar.
Mannerisms
Tavren leans forward when someone speaks, nodding with exaggerated seriousness, then abruptly steps back when it is his turn to answer. He smiles with his teeth when he is lying and closes his mouth when he is telling the truth. Before casting a spell, he taps two fingers against his wooden holy symbol as if checking whether it is still there.
Personality
Tavren is warm, intrusive, theatrical, and difficult to embarrass. He treats strangers like old acquaintances until they prove they prefer distance. He enjoys the rhythm of a con, but he is more interested in what people want to believe than in the money they carry. Beneath his swagger is a careful observer who notices exits, watches hands, and remembers every name.
Ideals
Freedom. No priest, magistrate, ancestor, or god should be allowed to decide what another person must believe. A useful lie is kinder than an imposed truth.
Bonds
He carries a small wooden holy symbol from the roadside shrine where his first genuine prayer was answered. He will risk himself to protect desperate people from confidence artists, especially those who use religion as their costume.
Flaws
He cannot resist improving a simple story until it becomes a dangerous one. When cornered, he lies first and considers the consequences later. He is also quietly convinced that anyone who claims to be completely honest is either a fool or preparing a trap.
Quirks
Background
Tavren Quetzal was raised among wood elves who measured honesty by action rather than confession. He learned early that a person could speak truthfully and still cause harm, while a well-chosen lie could get a wounded traveler past a bandit camp or keep a frightened child calm through a storm. His first deceptions were small, mostly invented blessings, counterfeit omens, and dramatic readings of ordinary bird calls. They became more elaborate after he discovered a neglected roadside shrine to a trickster aspect of the gods, where offerings were left by people who wanted miracles but could only afford theater. He began traveling under the name Brother Taz, presenting himself as a wandering cleric who could expose curses, bless marriages, and identify which of two identical heirlooms was the genuine article. Some of his miracles were frauds. Others were unmistakably divine, which unsettled him more than any angry client. Tavren now follows the path of the Trickery Domain, not because he believes deception is sacred, but because he believes certainty is dangerous. He joins adventurers to find out whether his god is teaching him to become a better liar, a better priest, or merely a more useful criminal.
