Appearance
Zook is a wiry gnome with mahogany skin and eyes the color of moss. He wears a custom cloak woven with actual leaves and pine needles that change color with the seasons. He wears a heavy brass-rimmed eyepiece over his left eye that assists with his long-range calculations.
Mannerisms
He tilts his head to the side when listening, as if triangulating the source of a sound. He often taps a rhythm on his crossbow stock while thinking.
Personality
Meticulous to a fault, Zook speaks in short, clipped sentences as if counting his words. He is calm under pressure and views every battle as a mathematical puzzle of trajectory and wind speed. He is much more comfortable in a high tree branch than in a crowded tavern.
Ideals
Vigilance. The peace of the many depends on the watchfulness of the few. Prevention is the greatest form of protection.
Bonds
The Heart-Tree of Oakhaven is the source of all life in my home, and I will dismantle my own weapon if it meant keeping its leaves green.
Flaws
I am prone to tunnel vision. Once I have a target in my sights, I ignore everything else around me, including my own safety.
Quirks
Background
Zook was born in the hidden canopy village of Oakhaven, where gnomes live in harmony with the great sequoias. While his peers focused on woodworking or illusionist pranks, Zook became obsessed with the mechanics of the ancient dwarf-made tools found in a nearby ruin. He realized that the village's traditional defenses were inadequate against the increasing pressure from hill giant scouts and marauding bands of goblins. He retreated to his workshop for two years, emerging with a weapon that could strike from beyond the range of any bow. He now serves as the village's unseen guardian, a phantom that resides in the treetops. He has single-handedly repelled multiple raids before the attackers even saw a village wall. Though the elders find his invention frightening, they cannot argue with its efficacy. Zook has recently ventured out into the wider world to find materials for his latest design, an ammunition type that can pierce magical wards.
