Appearance
Loithar is a broad, heavily scarred male tortle with dark olive-green scales, a weathered shell marked by axe cuts and fire-blackened grooves, and amber eyes that rarely stop watching the horizon. He wears battered leather straps, a red wool sash from his destroyed homeland, and a necklace made from small carved pieces of his family's broken home. His hands are callused from decades of training, and his greataxe is covered in old nicks that he refuses to repair.
Mannerisms
Loithar speaks slowly and deliberately, often pausing to listen to birds, wind, or distant footsteps before answering. When angered, he lowers his head and taps two claws against his shell in a steady rhythm. Before battle, he murmurs the names of his dead family, then rolls his shoulders as if settling a heavy burden into place.
Personality
Loithar is patient, protective, and unexpectedly gentle outside battle. He treats injured creatures, cooks simple meals for the group, and prefers listening to boasting. In combat he becomes a terrifying force of motion, roaring with grief and righteous fury. He considers trust more valuable than gold and believes that chosen family can be stronger than blood.
Ideals
Protection. Strength has meaning only when it is used to shelter those who cannot defend themselves. No one should lose their home and family while Loithar still has breath to fight.
Bonds
The adventuring party is Loithar's new family. He will risk everything to protect them, and he carries a fragment of his destroyed home as a reminder of those he failed to save.
Flaws
Loithar's fury can overwhelm his judgment, especially when he sees soldiers, raiders, or anyone threatening the helpless. He is suspicious of authority, refuses to retreat when loved ones are endangered, and sometimes mistakes self-destruction for courage.
Quirks
Background
Loithar was born in a quiet tortle settlement built among warm coastal marshes, where his family lived by fishing, herbalism, and patient observation of the natural world. Their home was destroyed when invading forces swept through the region, burning the settlement and killing nearly everyone Loithar loved. He survived by retreating into the wilderness, carrying only a chipped shell fragment from his family's dwelling and the lessons of an elderly hermit who taught him medicine, prayer, and the discipline of stillness. Stillness did not last. Loithar transformed grief into a lifetime of martial training. He learned to fight with a greataxe, to endure pain within his shell, and to unleash the primal fury that had been building since the destruction of his home. During years of solitude, he discovered that rage could be more than vengeance. It could be a shield for the helpless and a weapon against those who preyed upon the weak. Now he travels with his adventuring companions, whom he regards as his new family. He is determined that no invading army, tyrant, monster, or servant of evil will ever take them from him.
