Appearance
A broad-shouldered human man with sun-browned skin, a close-cropped black beard, and thick dark hair shaved at the sides. A pale scar cuts through his left eyebrow, and an older slash mark runs from his right shoulder to his ribs. He wears battered scale armor over a faded red military tunic, with a weathered green cloak pinned by an old army insignia. His hands are callused, his nose has been broken twice, and his gray-brown eyes constantly measure exits, weapons, and the people nearest him.
Mannerisms
He taps the haft of his greataxe three times before entering an unfamiliar room. When thinking, he presses his tongue against the scar in his eyebrow and counts under his breath in clipped military cadence.
Personality
Tarek is blunt, restless, and intensely practical. He respects competence more than rank and trusts people who admit fear without letting it make their decisions. He has a dry, unexpectedly gentle sense of humor around animals, children, and anyone trying to repair something with inadequate tools. He dislikes long speeches, ceremonial promises, and rooms with only one exit.
Ideals
Freedom. No banner, commander, temple, or law owns my hands. I protect people because I choose to, and I leave when that choice is taken from me.
Bonds
He carries the battered insignia of the unit that abandoned him and refuses to let anyone from that company die unattended if he can prevent it.
Flaws
He is quick to interpret advice as an attempt to control him, and once challenged, he would rather make a bad choice loudly than admit someone else was right. He also has a habit of leaving before a situation becomes emotionally complicated.
Quirks
Background
Tarek Iktan grew up on the edge of a hard-used frontier road, the son of a teamster and a woman who repaired harness, tents, and anything else soldiers were careless enough to break. He learned early that a human had to be useful before anyone bothered to ask where he came from. He hauled crates, tended draft animals, and listened to veterans argue over maps. When a recruiting officer offered steady meals and a place in the column, Tarek enlisted before his seventeenth birthday. He became a soldier because marching was easier than starving, then discovered he was very good at the part where plans stopped working. During a disastrous retreat through a dry ravine, Tarek held a collapsed gate long enough for his unit to escape. His rage was not noble or controlled, but it was effective. Afterward, the officers praised his courage while quietly blaming him for disobeying orders. Tarek left with his insignia, a dented handaxe, and the conviction that commands were only useful until they got people killed. Now he travels as a hired blade and occasional caravan guard, looking for work that lets him choose who deserves protection and when to walk away.
