Appearance
A tall, lean human man with olive skin, severe features, and carefully groomed black hair streaked with silver. Pierce has cold gray eyes that constantly scan doors, windows, and the hands of everyone nearby. He dresses in immaculate dark courtly clothing beneath a well-maintained leather cuirass, with a crimson sash bearing the faded colors of a nation he once ruled. His signet ring is worn on a chain around his neck rather than on his finger.
Mannerisms
Pierce speaks softly and precisely, forcing others to lean closer. He pauses before answering simple questions, as though checking several possible traps. During conversations, he subtly positions himself with his back to a wall and keeps one hand near his lute or rapier. When pleased, he taps a slow rhythm against his signet ring.
Personality
Pierce is cultivated, articulate, and relentlessly observant. He treats every conversation as a negotiation and every room as a political arena. He can be charming when it serves him, but his charm has the polished, bloodless quality of a royal proclamation. Beneath his composure is a man who expects betrayal at all times and mistakes suspicion for wisdom.
Ideals
Order. Freedom is merely the name the unprepared give to chaos. A strong ruler must make difficult choices for everyone, even when everyone hates him for it.
Bonds
The nation he once ruled is still his obsession. Pierce secretly maintains a network of former officials, informants, and loyalists, and intends to reclaim the country or destroy the faction that replaced him. He also carries a torn page from the constitution he abolished, a reminder that his greatest enemy was once his own conscience.
Flaws
Pierce assumes every kindness conceals a transaction and every silence conceals a conspiracy. He cannot leave a room without identifying at least three escape routes, and he reacts to minor criticism as if it were the opening move of a coup. His need for control makes him manipulative, exhausting, and dangerously unwilling to admit when he is wrong.
Quirks
Background
Pierce Valdemiro was born into a wealthy human noble family, raised among silk banners, hereditary feuds, and servants trained to smile while listening at doors. He despised the emptiness of aristocratic life, but not its privileges. His musical education began as a courtly obligation, teaching him the lute, rhetoric, and the subtle art of making an audience feel that its own thoughts had been spoken aloud. Pierce soon discovered that a well-placed song could ruin a rival more efficiently than a blade, while a flattering speech could turn a room of enemies into temporary allies. When his homeland fell into famine and political unrest, Pierce presented himself as the only disciplined alternative to incompetent nobles and frightened merchants. He promised order, then used speeches, blackmail, staged scandals, and carefully arranged public victories to seize control. Once crowned dictator, he transformed the nation into a machine of surveillance and obedience. His rule ended when nearly everyone closest to him betrayed him, including the guards he had personally chosen. Pierce escaped assassination, but lost his throne, his fortune, and the certainty that anyone could be trusted. Now he travels under a diminished version of his own name, seeking influence wherever he can find it. He still believes power is the only reliable protection, yet his paranoia has made him a living warning of what happens when ambition becomes more important than humanity.
