  • RageLevel 1

Riola can enter a rage as a Bonus Action. While raging, he gains Resistance to Bludgeoning, Piercing, and Slashing damage, advantage on Strength checks and Strength saving throws, and a bonus to damage with Strength-based attacks. His rage lasts up to 10 minutes and ends early if he wears heavy armor or stops attacking or forcing a saving throw each turn.

  • Intimidating PresenceLevel 14

While raging, Riola can use a Bonus Action to activate a terrifying presence. Creatures of his choice within 30 feet must succeed on a Wisdom saving throw or become Frightened for 1 minute. A frightened creature repeats the save at the end of each of its turns.

Appearance

Riola is a remarkably young-looking aarakocra with brilliant white feathers, a compact but rippling muscular body, and bright, curious eyes. He stands barefoot and nearly unclothed except for a small, threadbare loincloth, which he treats with complete practicality. His broad wings are powerful and carefully groomed, with the outer flight feathers slightly bent from years of hard landings and reckless dives. His hands are unusually callused for someone so young, especially across the palms and fingertips from gripping weapons, climbing stone walls, and hauling injured soldiers from battlefields. When waiting, he balances on the balls of his feet with his weight pitched forward, as if he might spring into the air at any moment.

Mannerisms

Riola tilts his head sharply when listening, preens one shoulder feather whenever he is pleased with himself, and punctuates serious statements with tiny military salutes. He tends to lean far too close when speaking, grinning as though every conversation is a private joke. Before a fight, he spreads his wings once, settles his weight onto his toes, and whispers, "Up, then down."

Personality

Riola is kind, flirty, bold, and intensely passionate. He greets strangers as potential friends, compliments enemies on their technique, and offers hugs with the same confidence that he offers challenges. His five-year-old appearance makes his astonishing physical power seem even more startling, but his heart is open and earnest. He loves applause, dramatic entrances, sweet fruit, warm stones, and anyone who treats small or frightened creatures gently.

Ideals

Freedom. No flock, army, king, or cage owns the sky. Strength matters most when it is used to lift up the frightened and break the chains around the helpless.

Bonds

The old soldiers who saved him are his flock. He will cross any battlefield, mountain, or plane to rescue one of them, and he keeps their broken insignia tied beneath his wing feathers. He also considers every frightened child and every abandoned fledgling part of his responsibility.

Flaws

Riola is fearless to the point of foolishness. He treats danger as an invitation, cannot resist a challenge, and often mistakes flirtation for diplomacy. His confidence is genuine but childish, and he becomes sulky when ignored, especially if someone else receives praise. He also believes that every problem can be solved by flying higher, hitting harder, or smiling more brightly.

Quirks

Names every weapon after a bird or cloud
Collects colorful feathers and gives them away as gifts
Challenges doorways, boulders, and statues to wrestling matches
Sings marching songs with made-up lyrics
Calls intimidating strangers "pretty thunder"

Background

Riola Fiala hatched beneath the white cliffs of a high aarakocra aerie, where children learned to fly before they learned to read the wind. He was five when a mercenary column reached the aerie and discovered that the small white-feathered fledgling possessed a startling strength. Rather than leave him behind during the evacuation, the soldiers carried him along, and Riola spent his earliest memories among marching boots, campfires, shouted commands, and battered shields. He copied every exercise he saw, turning drills into games and games into fierce contests. By the time the company realized he was not merely playing soldier, he had become its smallest standard-bearer and its most enthusiastic scout.
