Appearance
Muriel is a water genasi with sea-glass skin that shifts from pale turquoise at the hands and face to deep blue along the shoulders and back. Their thick hair floats and curls as though suspended underwater, usually gathered with bits of colored cord from old ship rigging. Salt and wind have roughened their knuckles and forearms, while their broad, expressive smile reveals a slightly pointed canine tooth and a habit of chewing thoughtfully on the inside of their cheek. They dress in a weathered sailor's coat over practical traveling clothes, with a crystal arcane focus hanging at their throat. Their eyes shimmer like sunlight on a harbor at noon.
Mannerisms
Muriel tilts their head as if listening to distant waves whenever someone speaks, taps rhythms against nearby wood, and smiles with their mouth closed before revealing their pointed canine tooth when genuinely amused.
Personality
Muriel is curious, irreverent, and socially fearless, with an instinct for making friends in rough company. They dislike rigid authority but respect competence, especially from people who can repair a sail, read a storm, or admit when they are lost. Their confidence often sounds like teasing, though they become intensely focused when a companion is threatened.
Ideals
Freedom. No captain, kingdom, prophecy, or god has the right to decide where a person belongs. The sea belongs to everyone, and so should the world.
Bonds
The old ship that raised Muriel, the Tide's Mercy, is still sailing somewhere beyond the horizon. Muriel intends to find it again, especially if the vessel or its crew is in danger.
Flaws
Muriel treats every warning as a challenge from fate and cannot resist proving that they can handle situations others consider impossible. They also abandon plans quickly when a more interesting possibility appears, leaving companions to deal with the consequences.
Quirks
Background
Muriel was born during a storm that tore through a coastal harbor, when seawater flooded the lower decks of a merchant vessel and their mother went into labor beneath the thunder. The crew considered the child an omen, but the ship's captain considered them lucky, especially after Muriel began predicting squalls by listening to the rhythm of water against the hull. They grew up among sailors, learning knots, tides, navigation, and the practical value of knowing when to keep quiet. Their elemental heritage made them a curiosity, but the sea was the only place where nobody expected them to explain exactly what they were.
