Appearance
A tall, broad-shouldered warforged built from dark walnut, lacquered iron, and pale brass fittings. Their face is smooth and practical, with a narrow metal jaw, amber glass eyes, and small geometric markings burned into the forehead like an old unit designation. They wear scale mail over a weather-darkened green coat, with a longbow and two shortswords kept within immediate reach. They smell faintly of cedar oil, bow wax, and clean metal, a scent they do not notice. Within a minute of meeting someone, they will usually touch the small brass disk set beneath their collar, checking its position with two fingers before continuing the conversation.
Mannerisms
Vojtek speaks in concise field reports until reminded that a conversation is not a military briefing. They pause before entering any room, quietly count its exits, and touch the brass disk beneath their collar whenever someone mentions a battlefield, a family, or the word home.
Personality
Vojtek is patient, observant, and quietly protective. They prefer practical kindness over reassurance, repairing a strap, standing watch, or placing themselves between danger and a companion. Their humor is dry and delayed, often arriving several seconds after everyone else has stopped speaking. They are fascinated by ordinary habits among living people, especially cooking, singing, and the many contradictory ways people say goodbye.
Ideals
Duty is a promise made to people, not to institutions. Orders that protect the helpless deserve loyalty. Orders that abandon them deserve resistance.
Bonds
The brass memorial disk beneath their collar contains the names of every soldier in their first company. Vojtek will risk almost anything to return those names to the families who still remember them.
Flaws
Vojtek struggles to abandon an objective once it has been defined, even when the objective has become foolish or dangerous. They also assume that every silence conceals an order, a threat, or a lost person who needs finding.
Quirks
Background
Unit designation K-7 was stamped into a brass plate, but the soldiers of the eastern reserve soon gave them a name instead, Vojtek, pronounced VOY-tek. They were assembled during the last years of a border war and assigned to patrol roads, escort supply wagons, and stand watch through nights when living sentries needed sleep. Vojtek learned the work by repetition, then by judgment. They became unusually good at noticing the small signs that preceded an ambush, a birdcall repeated too evenly, a wheel rut that ended too abruptly, a campfire built where no traveler would choose to stand. When the war ended, Vojtek was ordered to remain at an abandoned watch station with a sealed brass disk bearing the names of the dead in their company. The order was simple, preserve the record and await further command. No command came. Years later, Vojtek left the station, carrying the disk beneath their collar and taking work as a guide, scout, and monster hunter. They are searching for the surviving families of their old unit, not to ask forgiveness or praise, but to return the names. Along the way, they have decided that a soldier's duty is not obedience alone. It is making certain that someone gets home.
