Features
18 featuresAction
- Extra AttackLevel 5
You can attack twice instead of once whenever you take the Attack action on your turn.
Bonus action
- Step of the Wind
When Spend 1 Focus Point
Cecil can dash as a bonus action, or combine movement with disengage and leap farther than normal.
- Martial ArtsLevel 1
You have mastery of unarmed combat and monk weapons. You can make an unarmed strike as a bonus action, use Dexterity instead of Strength for attack and damage rolls with monk weapons and unarmed strikes, and use your Dexterity modifier for Grapple and Shove save DCs when using an unarmed strike.
Reaction
- Deflect AttacksLevel 3
When an attack hits you and deals bludgeoning, piercing, or slashing damage, you can use your reaction to reduce the damage by 1d10 + your Dexterity modifier + your monk level. If you reduce the damage to 0, you can spend 1 Focus Point to redirect the force to another creature in range, forcing a Dexterity save.
- Slow FallLevel 4
You can use a reaction to reduce falling damage by five times your monk level.
Always on
- Flurry of Blows
When Spend 1 Focus Point
If Cecil hits with Flurry of Blows, he can choose to add effects such as pushing, tripping, or preventing opportunity attacks, depending on his subclass if any is chosen later.
- Patient Defense
When Spend 1 Focus Point
Cecil can dodge while disengaging, helping him weave through danger with monkish agility.
- Unarmored DefenseLevel 1
While you are not wearing armor or wielding a shield, your AC equals 10 + your Dexterity modifier + your Wisdom modifier. This is not used here because your tortle natural armor is better.
- Monk's FocusLevel 2
You gain Focus Points equal to your monk level. You know Flurry of Blows, Patient Defense, and Step of the Wind, which let you spend Focus Points to strike more, defend yourself, or dash and reposition. Your Focus Point save DC is 8 + your proficiency bonus + your Wisdom modifier.
- Unarmored MovementLevel 2
Your speed increases by 10 feet while you are not wearing armor or wielding a shield.
- Uncanny MetabolismLevel 2
When you roll initiative, you can regain all expended Focus Points, and if you do, you regain hit points equal to your monk level plus your Martial Arts die roll. Once you use this feature, you must finish a long rest before using it again.
- Monk SubclassLevel 3
Choose a monk subclass. This character has not yet selected a subclass, so this feature is not otherwise expanded here.
- Stunning StrikeLevel 5
Once per turn when you hit with a monk weapon or unarmed strike, you can spend 1 Focus Point to force a Constitution save. On a failure, the target is stunned until the start of your next turn. On a success, its speed is halved until then and the next attack roll against it has advantage.
- TraitTortleNatural Armor, your shell gives you a base AC of 17, and you cannot benefit from wearing armor normally suited to other folk.
- TraitTortleClaws, you have claws that can be used as natural weapons for simple close combat.
- TraitTortleHold Breath, you can hold your breath for up to 1 hour.
- TraitTortleShell Defense, you can withdraw into your shell to defend yourself more fully, gaining powerful protection at the cost of mobility.
- ResearcherSage
You know where and how to find the hidden or forgotten lore of the multiverse. Libraries, archives, monasteries, and old records are never far from your thoughts, and scholars, scribes, and keepers of knowledge are inclined to help you when they can.

Appearance
Cecil is a broad, weathered tortle with a moss-green shell etched by old travel scratches and careful ink stains, as if books and battle have both pressed their signatures into him. He wears a simple scholar’s robe cut to hang loose around his shell, wraps his forearms in faded linen, and keeps a satchel of notes, brushes, and loose parchment tied close to his side. His eyes are bright, curious, and just a little tired, like someone who has spent years reading by lantern light and still believes there is one more truth hidden in the next page.
Mannerisms
Cecil speaks in measured, scholarly sentences until excitement breaks through and he starts gesturing with both hands as if he is annotating the air. When thinking, he taps the edge of his shell with one knuckle, and when he is especially pleased, he quietly recites a fact no one asked for. He bows with monkish courtesy, then immediately ruins the solemnity by grinning like a delighted archivist who just found a secret shelf.
Personality
Thoughtful, curious, and wry, Cecil loves the chase of an answer almost as much as the answer itself. He is patient in study but impulsive in the field, where his instinct for a clever shortcut or an experimental strike often wins out over caution. He respects discipline, but he trusts improvisation, and he is happiest when those two things work together.
Ideals
Curiosity. Every mystery deserves to be examined, no matter how old, dangerous, or inconvenient it may be. Knowledge is not sacred because it is safe, it is sacred because it changes the world when someone finally understands it.
Bonds
Cecil treasures the shell-scratched journal of his first monk tutor, a book filled with exercises, half-finished theories, and the name of a ruined temple the tutor never lived to explore. He has sworn to recover the truth behind that temple and finish the journey they began, even if he must chase the answer across half the world.
Flaws
Cecil cannot resist correcting a falsehood, even at the worst possible moment, and he sometimes values a clever explanation more than a simple, practical answer. He also has a habit of treating danger like a footnote he can outthink, which has nearly gotten him cracked, cursed, and dropped from ledges more than once.
Quirks
Background
Cecil was hatched in a quiet tortle enclave where the elders prized patience, maps, and stories as much as shell and claw. He showed an early gift for collecting fragments of lost history, copying inscriptions, and asking the sort of questions that made older tortles sigh and then answer anyway. When a wandering monk passed through the enclave in search of a ruined shrine, Cecil traded long evenings of scholarship for lessons in breath, balance, and striking without hesitation. He discovered that the discipline of the body could be every bit as precise as the discipline of the mind, and he loved that revelation almost as much as the arguments it caused. His life as a sage began in earnest after he left the enclave to serve in manor libraries, monastery archives, and dusty roadside scriptoria, where he earned his keep by cataloging forgotten volumes and copying damaged texts. Cecil came to believe that truth is rarely neat, and that the world belongs as much to the bold fool who tests it as to the careful scholar who explains it. He now travels with equal parts reverence and mischief, seeking broken legends, forbidden margins, and relics that deserve to be understood before they are wielded. If a mystery can be solved with both a footnote and a palm strike, Cecil considers that the best kind of day.
