Appearance
Vanko is a weathered human man of average height with a lean, battle-hardened build. His dark brown hair is cropped short, and a jagged scar runs from his left temple to the corner of his mouth. His gray-green eyes are watchful and tired, while his hands bear old burns, calluses, and the faint tremor of too many years gripping a sword. He keeps his chain mail carefully repaired beneath a faded blue surcoat marked with the remnants of his former regiment.
Mannerisms
Vanko checks doors, windows, and rooftops whenever he enters a room. He speaks in short, practical sentences and addresses strangers as if assigning them positions in a defensive formation. Before sleep, he silently counts his companions twice.
Personality
Quiet, observant, and dependable, Vanko prefers preparation to bravado. He is patient with frightened people and unexpectedly gentle with animals, but becomes cold and intensely focused when someone threatens civilians. He has a dry sense of humor that appears only around people he trusts.
Ideals
Protection. A soldier's duty is not to a banner, a throne, or a commander. It is to the people standing behind the shield wall.
Bonds
He will risk everything to protect refugees, camp followers, and ordinary villagers abandoned by armies or nobles. He keeps the battered insignia of his former regiment and hopes to one day find the surviving soldiers who stood with him at Red Hollow.
Flaws
Vanko distrusts commanders, nobles, and anyone who speaks of acceptable losses. He is slow to forgive betrayal and may disobey a sound order if it resembles the kind of sacrifice that ruined his regiment. When exhausted, he becomes grimly certain that only he can keep everyone alive.
Quirks
Background
Vanko Helsinov was born in a cold border village where every family kept a weapon near the door. He was never the strongest recruit, nor the most imposing, but he possessed a patient eye and an instinct for noticing danger before it arrived. The army valued those qualities. He became a scout, sentry, and eventually a line officer whose orders were quiet, precise, and usually followed. His regiment earned a reputation for holding evacuation routes open while civilians escaped, even when doing so meant abandoning valuable ground. That reputation ended during the Battle of Red Hollow. Vanko's commander ordered the regiment to protect a supply convoy while a nearby village was burned as a strategic sacrifice. Vanko disobeyed, leading half the soldiers back to the village and saving dozens of people. The convoy was lost, his commander was killed, and Vanko was stripped of rank. He still wears the regiment's insignia, not as a badge of obedience, but as a reminder of the soldiers who followed him and the civilians who survived. Now he travels as a sellsword and guardian, seeking work that gives him a chance to place himself between the helpless and those who would prey upon them.
