Appearance
Tavi is a compact lightfoot halfling with warm brown skin, tightly curled black hair, and a narrow face made expressive by constantly shifting eyebrows. Their clothes are practical rather than stylish, a dark green tunic beneath a weathered leather vest, fitted trousers, and soft-soled boots. Within a minute of meeting them, most people notice the sharp smell of clove oil, horse tack, and dust. Tavi knows exactly where the smell comes from and considers it useful, since strangers tend to underestimate anyone who smells like a stable. Their hands are small, quick, and heavily callused across the palms, with flattened fingertips from years of lock work, bowstring practice, and hauling reluctant fugitives through bad terrain.
Mannerisms
Tavi taps the side of their nose before asking a question, counts exits whenever they enter a room, and quietly hums three descending notes while examining tracks. When nervous, they polish a coin against their sleeve until it shines.
Personality
Tavi is alert, dryly funny, and professionally polite until someone lies badly. They treat every conversation like a trail, noting pauses, footwear, dirt under fingernails, and which details a person avoids. Tavi is kind to frightened people and irritatingly confident around bullies. They prefer a clean escape to a clean victory, but once they accept responsibility for a target's safety, they become stubbornly difficult to shake.
Ideals
Useful truth. A bounty hunter should bring back the right person, not merely the easiest person to accuse. Tavi believes competence is a form of mercy when used carefully.
Bonds
The Bounty Hunters Guild of Askia gave Tavi food, work, and a name worth remembering. Tavi will not willingly betray the guild's ordinary workers, especially stable hands and message runners, even if its officers deserve scrutiny.
Flaws
Tavi cannot resist proving that they noticed something others missed, even when silence would be safer. They also accept suspiciously dangerous jobs when someone suggests they are too small, too junior, or too replaceable to handle them.
Quirks
Background
Tavi Ajani was raised behind the mule yards of Askia's southern gate, where their family repaired harnesses and quietly carried messages for anyone who paid on time. Tavi learned early that a person could disappear without magic, simply by changing shoes, shaving their beard, or taking the road nobody watched. Their first bounty was not a fugitive at all, but a stolen guild ledger found beneath a mattress in a boardinghouse. Tavi returned it, accepted half the promised reward after the clerk tried to cheat them, and discovered that the Bounty Hunters Guild of Askia valued useful results more than noble blood or impressive size. Now Tavi serves as an expendable novice, sent after debt dodgers, runaway witnesses, petty smugglers, and targets senior hunters consider beneath their notice. They have survived by being observant, quick to retreat, and willing to ask questions that make larger people uncomfortable. Tavi is determined to earn a full guild badge, not for prestige, but because novices are assigned the dangerous work without being given the authority to refuse it. Their current contract concerns a missing courier who supposedly stole a sealed dispatch from the guild itself. Tavi suspects the courier was framed, but the guild has already marked the bounty as recoverable property, and that makes the truth inconvenient.
