Appearance

A pale, beautiful wood elf woman with long, nearly white-blonde hair, sharp delicate features, and clear gray-green eyes. She dresses in weathered scale mail beneath a dark green cloak, with a polished wooden holy symbol of a sunburst tied at her throat. Her hands are quick and restless, often checking the holy symbol, the ties of her armor, or the small knife at her belt. She walks with a light, slightly forward-leaning gait, as if always ready to slip through a crowd or rush toward danger.

Mannerisms

Within a minute of meeting someone, she will usually touch or adjust her holy symbol at least once. She scans exits while speaking, shifts her weight toward the nearest source of danger, and smiles faintly during arguments as though conflict has finally become honest.

Personality

Shessara is compassionate, alert, and unusually comfortable amid disorder. She speaks softly until someone is being bullied, then becomes direct and fearless. She has a dry sense of humor, distrusts polished authority, and tends to treat every stranger as a possible victim before treating them as a possible enemy. She is kind without being gentle, and brave without being careful.

Ideals

Mercy is an act of defiance. The world may be chaotic and cruel, but every person saved from needless suffering is proof that goodness can choose its own path.

Bonds

The nameless street children of the Brink of Nowhere are her family, even though she does not know whether they still live. She carries a tiny wooden sunburst carved by the priest who rescued her and will risk herself to protect anyone abandoned by society.

Flaws

She mistakes recklessness for courage when someone is being threatened. She is deeply suspicious of orderly institutions and can sabotage a safe plan simply because it feels too much like obedience. Her missing memories leave her vulnerable to anyone who claims to know where she came from.

Quirks

She gives names to important alleys and rooftops, even when nobody else does.
She leaves small pieces of bread near city shrines for strangers and animals.
She dislikes perfectly symmetrical rooms and will subtly move one object out of alignment.
She remembers people by their footsteps more easily than by their faces.

Background

Shessara remembers almost nothing of the place where her life began. In her mind it is only the Brink of Nowhere, a stretch of alleys, broken walls, smoky rooms, and cold streets surrounded by people who survived through theft, threats, and betrayal. She does not know whether it was a city, a prison, or the ruins of something older. She remembers criminals arguing in whispers, children learning to hide before they learned to read, and the constant sense that something cruel was watching from just beyond the firelight. She should have become hard and vicious. Instead, an instinct for mercy survived in her, stubborn and unexplained. A wandering priest of the goddess Lathander found her protecting an injured street child from a gang and took her into the temple. Shessara learned prayers, first aid, and the discipline to place herself between the helpless and the violent. She never became fully obedient to temple custom, however. She believes goodness is not a wall that keeps chaos out, but a light carried directly into it. Now she travels as a cleric, following rumors of corruption and oppression. Whenever violence begins, she feels an almost physical need to enter the struggle, especially when doing so might make the world around her a little less cruel. If chaos is part of her destiny, she intends to turn it against evil.
