Appearance

A lithe wood elf with weathered features, leaf-green eyes, and a long ash-brown braid wrapped with cord and tiny carved bone charms. Wears scale mail beneath a faded forest cloak, with a longbow across the back and a pair of well-kept shortswords at the hips. Carries the quiet poise of someone used to moonlit trails and sudden danger.

Mannerisms

Speaks softly and pauses to listen before answering, often turning their head as if measuring the wind. When thinking, Elaris unconsciously rubs the edge of a bowstring between two fingers or taps a rhythm on a bracer to mimic bird calls.

Personality

Patient, observant, and gently stubborn, Elaris approaches every problem like a trail that can be read if one is willing to slow down. They are warm with ordinary travelers, merciless toward predators and exploiters, and strangely tender when mending broken gear or caring for wounded creatures.

Ideals

Stewardship. The wild is not a resource to be consumed, but a living covenant to be guarded. A good ranger protects the path so others may follow it safely.

Bonds

Elaris keeps a carved pine talisman from the shrine where the smugglers were unmasked, and refuses to let it leave their sight. They are sworn to protect the hidden paths between settlements, especially the routes children and travelers use when danger makes the main road unwise.

Flaws

Elaris trusts the judgment of tracks and signs more readily than the words of nobles or priests, and that skepticism can make them dismiss genuine warnings. They also struggle to ask for help, preferring to shoulder danger alone until exhaustion makes the choice for them.

Quirks

Names every important trail, tree, and stream they camp beside.
Leaves a small offering of water or grain for animals before a difficult journey.
Counts arrows under their breath when anxious.

Background

Born in the high boughs of an old forest enclave, Elaris Thalanil was raised to read the pulse of the wild the way others read a ledger. She learned to track deer by broken fern, to hear storm change in the hush of birds, and to loose an arrow before a predator could choose a target. Yet the forest was not always a sanctuary. When loggers, poachers, and hungry monsters began to press deeper into the canopy, Elaris became one of the rangers sent to patrol the border paths and protect the hidden roads between scattered communities. During one long winter she followed a wounded owlbear to a ruined shrine and found it being used as a meeting place by smugglers who were feeding stolen relics to a corrupt baron. Elaris dismantled the ring with patience, not fury, and in the aftermath discovered a strange truth, the wild does not only need hunters, it needs wardens. Now Elaris travels wherever the tracks grow thin and the roads grow unsafe, carrying the discipline of the forest and the stubborn hope that every border can still become a bridge.
