Appearance
Cappy Barre is a broad-shouldered human man with a weather-darkened complexion, a thick neck, and powerful forearms shaped by years of marching, digging, and hauling gear. His most noticeable feature is his jaw, square and slightly offset, with one prominent lower canine that shows whenever he grins or chews. His sun-bleached brown hair is cut short beneath a battered military cap, and his gray-green eyes are steady and watchful. He wears practical travel leathers beneath mismatched pieces of old military equipment, with a red cord tied around his left wrist as a reminder of his former unit.
Mannerisms
Cappy listens with his head slightly bowed, as if receiving battlefield instructions. Before entering a dangerous place, he quietly checks the exits, counts the people present, and taps two fingers against the red cord on his wrist. When angry, he becomes more polite rather than less.
Personality
Cappy is calm, practical, and unusually attentive to frightened people. He dislikes grand speeches but remembers small promises exactly. He treats camp chores as sacred, believes every group needs someone who keeps count of supplies, and has a dry sense of humor that appears only after danger has passed.
Ideals
Duty. A promise made to ordinary people matters more than an order written by someone who will never face the consequences.
Bonds
The surviving members of his old unit are family to him, and he will cross dangerous country to protect or recover one of them. He also carries the red unit cord for the soldiers who died at the mountain pass.
Flaws
Cappy distrusts officers, nobles, and anyone who gives orders from a safe distance. He can become stubbornly silent when he knows he is being managed, and once he decides someone is a coward, it is difficult to earn back his respect. In moments of stress, he may choose the hard, direct solution even when patience would save lives.
Quirks
Background
Cappy Barre was raised in a human farming village where every able body was expected to work before breakfast. He learned early that strength was useful, but endurance was better. When a harsh winter ruined the local harvest, Cappy enlisted in the army rather than watch his family go hungry. He became a shield-line soldier, then a field runner, and finally the person commanders sent into places where plans had already failed. He was never the most educated man in the company, but he could read a trail, judge a camp, and tell when a frightened recruit was about to break. During a border campaign, Cappy's unit was ordered to hold a mountain pass long enough for civilians to escape. The order was successful, but the command that issued it abandoned the soldiers afterward. Cappy survived with a handful of others, carrying their unit's red cord as proof that they had not simply vanished. He left the army soon after, unwilling to serve officers who treated people as numbers. Now he works as a guard, caravan hand, and occasional adventurer. His temper is controlled until someone threatens the helpless, at which point the old battlefield fury rises quickly and without ornament.
