Appearance
Cain is a broad-shouldered human man with ruddy skin, short spiky gray hair, and cruel green eyes softened only by a winning smile. Bullet-shrapnel scars mark one side of his face. His torso is covered in old bullet wounds, and he has a sober story for every one. He wears black flak armor made from layered, impact-absorbing plates over his torso, arms, and legs, heavy laced boots reaching to his shins, and a blood-red belt with a bronze skull before a sun as its buckle. A heavy eagle necklace hangs at his throat, and his shield bears a stark golden sunburst.
Mannerisms
Cain speaks like a preacher addressing a packed hab concourse. He rarely raises his voice, because he expects people to listen. When telling the story of a scar, he touches it once, gives the number of people involved, and leaves out the parts that make him look heroic. Before violence, he straightens his belt buckle and checks the eagle at his throat.
Personality
Cain is an intense, persuasive evangelist who treats every conversation as a chance to recruit, rally, or warn. He is grim and calculating in danger, yet unexpectedly patient with frightened civilians and inexperienced companions. His loyalty is absolute once given, and he protects his allies with the possessive determination of a gang leader defending his own.
Ideals
Order. The helpless need protection, and protection requires discipline, strength, and someone willing to make the hard decision.
Bonds
The soldiers and civilians who followed Cain in the hive's middle levels are his people. He will return to them one day, and he will not return empty-handed.
Flaws
Cain cannot tolerate cowardice, especially in himself. He is quick to seize command, slow to forgive betrayal, and dangerously willing to turn a righteous cause into a personal war. He believes every problem has a strong enough leader, and he often mistakes obedience for trust.
Quirks
Background
Cain Castus was born in the middle levels of a colossal hive city, where millions lived beneath poisoned skies and the laws of the powerful were enforced by guns, hunger, and fear. He served as a soldier in the city's endless territorial wars, learning to read a battlefield, command frightened people, and survive wounds that should have killed him. His father, a veteran before him, left Cain a monomolecular-edged sword and a warning: a weapon is only as honorable as the cause behind it. Cain carries the blade still, though he has never pretended that his causes were always clean. After leaving the military, Cain became a gang leader, evangelist, and political firebrand. His sermons spread through factory habs and overcrowded transit tunnels, promising that the forgotten were not abandoned by the sun. Whether that power came from a god, a force beyond the stars, or Cain's own unbreakable conviction, divine magic answered when he called. He now travels beyond the hive, carrying a combat shotgun with an under-slung flamer, protecting the weak with the same ruthless efficiency he once used to conquer territory. He is a grim, hard, cunning man, but those who earn his loyalty discover a fiercely protective commander who would rather take a bullet than allow one of his people to fall.
