Appearance
Gideon is a towering, broad-shouldered goliath standing nearly eight feet tall, with charcoal-gray skin, red eyes, and long black hair usually tied back with a strip of leather. His upper back and shoulders are covered in angular tribal markings that resemble glowing cracks in cooling iron. In moments of intense combat, those markings flare with fiery red light and heat radiates from his skin. He moves with deliberate, heavy steps and instinctively measures every doorway, ceiling, and piece of furniture before entering a room. Despite his size, he is unnervingly still when listening, then suddenly explosive when he decides to act. He wears practical chain mail beneath a dark smith's apron, carries a katana-like longsword at his left hip, and keeps his father's smithing hammer secured across his back.
Mannerisms
Gideon stands with his feet planted wider than necessary and automatically checks the balance of any blade placed within reach. Before answering an important question, he taps the pommel of his katana twice. When angered, he becomes quieter rather than louder, and nearby metal subtly warms beneath his hands.
Personality
Confident, direct, and intensely focused, Gideon speaks plainly and expects promises to be treated as binding. He is aggressive and decisive in combat, but he does not enjoy cruelty or needless suffering. He respects people who work with their hands, keeps his word even when it hurts him, and has a surprisingly gentle patience for apprentices, animals, and anyone trying to repair something they have broken.
Ideals
Strength is a duty, not a privilege. The strong must build, defend, and endure so that others are not forced to become strong merely to survive.
Bonds
My father's smithing hammer is both my inheritance and my promise. I will find him, rescue him if he lives, and learn the truth of why he was taken. One day I will forge a katana worthy of his teachings and place it in his hands.
Flaws
I mistake hesitation for weakness and have difficulty accepting plans that require patience, compromise, or retreat. When someone insults my father's memory or questions my strength, I respond before I have considered the consequences. I also fear that my worth may depend entirely on surpassing the man who taught me.
Quirks
Background
Gideon was raised in a small forest home built beside his father's forge. His father was a skilled blacksmith who taught him more than the secrets of metal. He taught Gideon how to read the wilderness, keep a fire alive through rain, judge the balance of a weapon, and fight with the discipline of a soldier. Gideon became fascinated by elegant curved blades, especially katanas, and began dreaming of forging one so perfectly balanced that it would seem to choose its own path through the air. His father taught him that a weapon's worth was not measured by how much it destroyed, but by what it allowed its wielder to protect.
