Appearance
A wiry male kenku with soot-gray feathers, a white scar crossing the left eye ridge, and bright amber eyes that never seem to rest. He wears layered leather and scale mail suited for travel, a weathered hood, and a quiver filled with neat, carefully maintained arrows. His talons are wrapped in faded cord, and a necklace of carved antlers and river stones hangs at his throat, each piece taken from a different wilderness camp.
Mannerisms
He pauses before speaking, as if selecting each phrase from a cabinet of remembered sounds. When excited, he clicks his beak twice and shifts his weight from talon to talon. He habitually scans treetops, doorways, and muddy ground before sitting or resting.
Personality
Quietly vigilant and unexpectedly warm, Scrib treats every campfire like a promise that nobody should be left hungry or alone. He is cautious in unfamiliar company, but once he decides someone is safe, his loyalty becomes fierce and almost comically protective.
Ideals
Freedom. The wild should belong to the quick, the kind, and the clever, not to tyrants, slavers, or anyone who cages what they do not understand.
Bonds
He keeps a bundle of old trail markers, arrow shafts, and carved tokens from every safe camp that ever fed him, and he guards them like holy relics. He also owes his life to the ranger who taught him to track honestly instead of merely to steal, and he will not let that mentor's name be forgotten.
Flaws
He sometimes answers with borrowed phrases at the worst possible moment, which can make him seem evasive or mocking even when he is sincere. He has trouble trusting any agreement that was not spoken face to face, and when frightened he becomes so focused on escape routes that he can forget the feelings of the people beside him.
Quirks
Background
Scrib was born among scraps, not among kin. He hatched in the shadow of a ruined watchtower where a roaming band of smugglers once hid from the law, and his first memories are of stolen lantern light, broken wagon wheels, and voices he could never truly make his own. Like many kenku, he learned the world through fragments, the creak of a saddle, the whistle of an arrow, the bark of a hunter calling a dog back from the brush. He survived by listening, imitating, and watching the wild places beyond the camp, until the forest became more honest to him than any crowded street. When the smugglers were finally driven out, Scrib refused to go with them. He wandered deeper into the woods, living by his wits and learning every deer trail, stream crossing, and berry patch within a hard day's travel. A lone ranger took notice of the clever bird-man stalking the treeline, and though the tutor expected a nuisance, he found a fast learner with a gift for silence and patience. Scrib took to the bow as if it had always belonged in his talons, and now he roams as a protector of roads, camps, and hidden paths, helping the lost find shelter and making certain that cruel folk do not own the wild.
