Appearance
A broad-shouldered hill dwarf with iron-gray hair braided close to the scalp and a heavy russet beard bound at the end with a strip of blue cloth. His hands are permanently darkened around the nails by old campfire soot and weapon oil. He smells faintly of crushed juniper, lamp smoke, and oiled leather, a scent he does not notice until someone comments on it. A small bronze cooking cup hangs from his belt, worn smooth along one side where his thumb rubs it during prayer. His scale mail is practical rather than ceremonial, with a blue thread woven through several links to mark the soldiers he failed to bring home.
Mannerisms
Bruk rubs the smooth side of his bronze cup whenever he is thinking. Before entering a dangerous place, he silently counts the exits, then touches two fingers to his shield and says, "No more than we must." He addresses enemies by name whenever he learns one.
Personality
Bruk is patient with frightened people, respectful toward honest enemies, and deeply uncomfortable with anyone who enjoys war. He speaks in short practical sentences, notices who has not eaten, and treats camp cooking as a sacred duty. He is more likely to ask a wounded bandit what happened than to deliver a sermon, but once he decides someone is preying on the helpless, his calm becomes immovable.
Ideals
Mercy is not softness. The true measure of strength is whether you use it to make sure the powerless get another morning.
Bonds
The blue threads in his armor represent soldiers whose bodies were never recovered. He will risk almost anything to return the dead to their families or at least give them a name.
Flaws
He cannot accept that some deaths are beyond anyone's responsibility, so he turns grief into blame and often chooses a guilty party before he has all the facts. He is also suspicious of peaceful institutions that have never had to decide who gets the last bandage.
Quirks
Background
Bruk was a shield-bearer in a border war that had outlived every reason anyone could remember for starting it. He was not a hero. He carried water, dragged wounded men clear of the mud, and learned how to sleep beside a corpse without asking whether it had been friend or enemy. During the Battle of Red Ford, his unit was trapped beneath a collapsed supply wagon while the field burned around them. Bruk prayed to every god whose name he knew, then to the empty sky when those names failed him. At dawn, he found a living enemy soldier pinned beside him, sharing the last mouthful of water. Bruk freed the man before himself, and in that moment he felt a presence, not a voice, but a firm pressure like a hand on his shoulder. It did not promise victory. It demanded that he preserve life where he could and stand between the helpless and those who would grind them into banners. Bruk left the army carrying the bronze cup from that ruined camp. He now serves the unnamed mercy he found in the mud, though he still has not decided whether it belongs to a god, a saint, or something older than both.
