- Martial Arts Follow-Up
When After taking the Attack action while meeting Martial Arts requirements
When Leonardo takes the Attack action, he can follow with a Bonus Action Unarmed Strike. If he is unarmed or using only monk weapons and not wearing armor or using a shield, he can use his Martial Arts die for his Unarmed Strike or monk weapon damage.
- Martial ArtsLevel 1
You have mastered the fundamental techniques of unarmed combat and monk weapons. While you are unarmed or wielding only monk weapons and aren’t wearing armor or wielding a shield, you can make one Unarmed Strike as a Bonus Action. Your Unarmed Strike and monk weapon damage uses your Martial Arts die, which is 1d6 at 1st level. You can use Dexterity instead of Strength for attack and damage rolls with your Unarmed Strikes and monk weapons, and you can use Dexterity instead of Strength for the saving throw DC of your Grapple or Shove options when you use an Unarmed Strike.

- Dexterous Attacks
When When making attacks with Unarmed Strikes or monk weapons
Leonardo can use Dexterity instead of Strength for the attack and damage rolls of his Unarmed Strikes and monk weapons.
- Dexterous Grapple or Shove
When When using an Unarmed Strike to Grapple or Shove
If Leonardo uses an Unarmed Strike to Grapple or Shove, he can use Dexterity instead of Strength for the saving throw DC.
- Unarmored DefenseLevel 1
You know how to use inner discipline to protect yourself without heavy gear. If you aren’t wearing armor or using a shield, your AC equals 10 + your Dexterity modifier + your Wisdom modifier. For Leonardo, his tortle shell is better, so his Natural Armor AC is used instead, but this feature still defines how monks normally defend themselves.
- ClawsTortleYour claws are natural weapons you can use to make unarmed strikes.
- Hold BreathTortleYou can hold your breath for a long time, letting you move through water or foul air with ease.
- Natural ArmorTortleYour shell provides a base AC of 17, and your Dexterity modifier doesn’t affect that number. You gain no benefit from wearing armor, though a shield can apply normally.
- Nature's IntuitionTortleYou have proficiency in one skill of your choice from Animal Handling, Nature, Perception, or Survival. For Leonardo, this is reflected as Survival training.
- Shell DefenseTortleYou can withdraw into your shell as a defensive measure, though at level 1 this is more of an emergency tactic than a lifestyle.
- Military RankSoldier
Leonardo carries himself with the bearing of a veteran recruit. He knows how to read a chain of command, identify military etiquette, and move with enough authority that common soldiers and camp guards often assume he belongs where he stands. In practice, this means he can usually secure an audience with a martial officer, request basic lodging or supplies from a friendly unit, or recognize the insignia and duties of organized forces.

Appearance
A sturdy tortle with an emerald-green shell scratched by old sewer stone, a lean martial build, and alert amber eyes. He wears simple traveler’s clothes cut for agility, wraps his wrists and ankles in worn cloth, and keeps a pair of short swords and a spear close at hand. His stance is calm but coiled, like a disciplined fighter who could spring into motion at any moment.
Mannerisms
Leonardo speaks in a measured, leader-like tone and often folds his arms behind his shell when thinking. He instinctively bows his head before speaking to elders or allies, taps two fingers against his shell when planning, and unconsciously assumes defensive stances when someone raises their voice.
Personality
Stoic, focused, and quietly heroic, Leonardo acts like the team’s anchor even when he is secretly carrying more doubt than he admits. He respects order, but not for its own sake, only because structure helps him protect the people he loves. He is courteous to allies, serious in battle, and oddly gentle with children, animals, and anyone who looks lost.
Ideals
Discipline. Freedom without discipline is just another kind of prison. I believe a clear mind, a steady hand, and loyalty to the people at your side can turn raw chaos into real strength.
Bonds
My brothers are my first duty, and I would cross any sewer, battlefield, or kingdom to bring them home safe. I also owe my life and my code to Master Splinter, whose teachings I will honor by protecting the innocent and standing firm when others lose their way.
Flaws
I take responsibility for everyone, even when it means I become stubborn, overprotective, and unwilling to ask for help. If a plan exists, I will cling to it too tightly, and if my brothers are involved, I can turn a sensible retreat into a heated argument.
Quirks
Background
Leonardo began life as a tiny swamp turtle in the under-darkness beneath a sprawling metropolis, where the city’s sewer tunnels became his first cradle and his first battlefield. Then a clumsy alchemist shattered a vial of unstable green mutagen into the drains, bathing Leonardo and his three brothers in a transformative sludge that awakened them in body, mind, and reflex. What should have been a meaningless accident became the start of an impossible family legend. Their new lives were shaped in hidden chambers, on slick brickwork, and in the echoing spaces beneath the streets where survival demanded speed, teamwork, and a very sharp sense of humor. They were taken in by Master Splinter, an elderly giant wererat monk whose patience was as legendary as his discipline. Under his guidance, Leonardo learned that strength without restraint is only chaos, and that true mastery is the ability to protect others even when fear or anger would be easier. His soldier training came not from a formal army, but from Splinter’s stern lessons about formation, vigilance, and responsibility. Leonardo became the one who tried to keep his brothers focused, the one who listened first, and the one who believed that even in a world of shadows, a disciplined heart could be a bright and lawful weapon.
