Appearance
Minnie SmallCreek is a broad-shouldered half-orc woman with warm gray-green skin, a square jaw, small lower tusks, and thick black hair usually tied back with strips of red leather. Her hands are enormous and heavily calloused, with fine metal dust permanently settled into the lines of her palms from years at the forge. She smells faintly of oak smoke, hot iron, yeast, and the citrus soap her mother insists she use before entering the taproom. Her favored axe, Puppy, is a stout single-bladed hand axe with a brass collar and a leather-wrapped grip. Minnie has polished the axe head so carefully that it gleams like a friendly silver tooth.
Mannerisms
Minnie tests the edge of Puppy with her thumb before important conversations, taps her knuckles twice on wooden tables for luck, and addresses animals in the same calm, respectful tone she uses with frightened customers. When angry, she becomes extremely polite and starts explaining exactly how much damage a person is about to cause themselves.
Personality
Minnie is steady, hospitable, and fiercely protective. She speaks plainly, remembers everyone's usual drink, and treats practical competence as a form of kindness. She is more comfortable repairing a wagon wheel than discussing her feelings, but she notices small discomforts quickly and fixes them without being asked.
Ideals
Duty. A craftsperson is responsible for what she makes and for the people who depend on it. Minnie believes strength is a tool, and tools are meant to protect the vulnerable rather than glorify the person holding them.
Bonds
The SmallCreek tavern and her stepfather's smithy are her family, and she will defend both with her life. She also feels responsible for the guild apprentices who looked up to her before she left.
Flaws
Minnie assumes that any problem can be solved with enough force, enough patience, or both. She is slow to forgive insults against her family or guild, and when someone threatens either, her good judgment can vanish behind her tusks.
Quirks
Background
Minnie grew up above her mother's busy roadside tavern, where she learned that a good barkeeper remembers who is lonely, who is lying, and who has had enough to drink. Her mother taught her to settle arguments with a clean table, a full bowl, and a firm hand on the door. When Minnie's mother married a traveling blacksmith, Minnie gained a stepfather who taught her the language of iron. She learned to judge a blade by its balance, a horseshoe by its ring, and a person's character by whether they thanked the person who mended their tools. Minnie never fit comfortably into the narrow expectations placed on half-orcs. Her tusks made strangers wary, but her patience and practical kindness made regulars seek her out. When bandits began extorting caravans that supplied the tavern and the smithy, Minnie took up a forge-made axe and drove them away. The guild called her actions courageous, though her stepfather called them overdue practice. She named the axe Puppy because it is loyal, eager, and always wants to be taken for a walk. Now Minnie travels as a caravan guard and troubleshooter, protecting craftspeople, travelers, and anyone else who cannot afford to hire a whole company of soldiers. She still sends most of her earnings home, along with detailed letters about every fight, every broken buckle, and every tavern worth visiting.
