Appearance
Brok Raut is a broad, weathered dwarf with a square beard gone uneven after the loss of his left arm. His remaining hand is heavily callused, his knuckles scarred, and a pale cut runs from his brow to his cheek. He wears a patched mail shirt beneath a dark wool coat, with a leather harness adapted for one-handed fighting. His beard is bound with iron rings bearing the worn marks of his clan. His eyes are brown, watchful, and almost always fixed on the nearest exit or the hands of strangers.
Mannerisms
Brok rubs the empty sleeve of his harness whenever he is angry or uncertain. Before entering a dangerous place, he whispers the names of three dead clansfolk. When he hears a three-note whistle, he stops speaking and reaches for his axe.
Personality
Brok is blunt, suspicious, and grimly practical, but he is gentler with mourners, children, and anyone who has lost a home. He dislikes polished speeches and trusts people who work with their hands. Though he rarely laughs, his humor is dry and unexpectedly sharp.
Ideals
Memory. The dead are not gone while someone remembers their names, and justice is the final form of prayer.
Bonds
I will find the people responsible for destroying my clan, and I will bring their leader's head back to the ruined clan shrine.
Flaws
Once Brok decides someone is connected to his clan's killers, evidence rarely changes his mind. He confuses mercy with weakness and secretly fears that without his rage, he has nothing left to live for.
Quirks
Background
Brok Raut was born beneath a mountain whose lower halls once rang with clan hammers, miners' songs, and the measured recitation of ancestral prayers. He served as a shrine attendant before he was old enough to carry a proper axe, learning the names of the dead and the rites used to keep their memories alive. When raiders and hired killers came to the clanhold, the attack was swift, disciplined, and deliberate. Brok fought beside his kin until a hooked blade took his left arm and a second strike brought down the clan's high shrine. He survived beneath the bodies of his family, listening to the killers search the ruins for something they never found. The killers left no banner, but Brok remembers fragments, a three-note whistle, boots marked with pale clay, and a commander who spoke with a calm voice while ordering the old and wounded slain. Brok now travels as a wandering acolyte and sells his strength as a barbarian because prayer alone did not save his clan. He carries a broad battleaxe in his remaining hand and uses his rage as both weapon and confession, severing the heads of those he believes serve the same hidden enemy. He does not yet know whether vengeance will reveal the truth or consume the last part of him that still deserves peace.
