Appearance
Stocky mountain dwarf with a weathered iron-gray beard braided into three ropes, a scar across the left brow, and steel-blue eyes that miss little. He wears a polished chain mail hauberk over a practical soldier's surcoat, with a shield marked by old unit tally marks and a warhammer kept meticulous and clean.
Mannerisms
He stands at attention when introduced, taps two fingers against his shield before making a decision, and unconsciously assesses every room for exits, cover, and high ground. When thinking hard, he rubs his beard braid between thumb and forefinger.
Personality
Calm under pressure, exact in speech, and stubbornly reliable. Borin respects competence above birth, keeps his gear immaculate, and never asks others to do a job he will not do himself.
Ideals
Duty. A promise made in formation is sacred, whether it is sworn to a commander, a village, or the dead. Someone must stand the line when others cannot.
Bonds
He keeps a small brass token from his fallen squad, and he has sworn that their names will be honored wherever his road takes him.
Flaws
He treats every disagreement like a tactical problem, even when compassion would serve better. He also finds it hard to admit fear, and will sometimes charge ahead simply to prove he still can.
Quirks
Background
Borin Stoneward was born beneath the roots of a mountain hold where every child learned the sound of hammer on anvil before they learned their own name. He was expected to become a smith like his father, but Borin wanted a sterner forge, one that tempered the body as well as the blade. When border raids began to threaten the caravans that fed his clan, he took the oath of service and enlisted in the company that defended the pass. He discovered quickly that he had a soldier's mind for discipline and a dwarf's patience for long wars, and before long he was trusted with holding a shield wall under fire. Years of marching, drilling, and surviving bad commands taught Borin that courage is easy to boast about and harder to keep when the mud is knee-deep and the arrows are falling. He left the army after a battle that was won too dearly, carrying the names of the dead in his memory and on the notches cut into his shield. Now he travels as a professional fighter, seeking worthy causes, guarding roads, and testing himself against threats that can be met with steel and resolve. He still salutes officers, still counts rations by habit, and still sleeps with his weapon within reach, as if some part of him never truly left the field.
