Appearance
Gretel is a broad-shouldered Goliath woman standing just over seven feet tall, with slate-gray skin, pale blue eyes, and thick black hair braided with scraps of colored thread from old library bindings. She wears battered leather armor beneath a scholar's robe cut short for travel, and carries a quarterstaff marked with careful notations. Her voice is unusually soft for someone so large, almost a whisper in quiet rooms. When frightened or angry, her breathing becomes audible and deliberate, each breath sounding like a page being slowly turned. She smells faintly of cedar oil, lamp smoke, and old paper.
Mannerisms
Gretel pauses to breathe slowly before answering difficult questions. She taps the edge of a book three times before opening it, speaks in a whisper even when there is no need, and unconsciously lowers her head when entering rooms despite being much taller than almost everyone around her.
Personality
Gretel is patient, observant, and gently protective. She treats frightened people with unusual dignity and has an instinctive habit of making herself physically smaller when speaking to them. She prefers precise questions to arguments, quiet libraries to crowded taverns, and practical kindness to grand declarations. Though she appears timid, she becomes immovable when someone is being exploited or when knowledge is being destroyed.
Ideals
Knowledge should be a lantern, not a weapon. The more dangerous the truth, the more carefully it must be placed in the hands of those who will use it to protect others.
Bonds
I owe my life to the remote monastery whose librarians hid me from the fiend's first collectors. I will protect its people and recover the monastery's stolen archive.
Flaws
Gretel assumes every promise has hidden terms, including promises made by friends. When overwhelmed, she retreats into research rather than admitting fear, and her need to understand the fiend's pact sometimes leads her dangerously close to using its power for its own sake.

Background
Gretel was raised among a wandering Goliath clan that measured worth through endurance, judgment, and the ability to carry what others could not. As a child, she discovered that books were another kind of burden, heavy with the weight of lives, wars, mistakes, and promises. Monasteries and manor libraries welcomed her as a porter, copyist, and occasional guardian, and in exchange she learned languages, histories, and the careful rituals by which scholars protect dangerous knowledge. Her low, almost apologetic voice made people underestimate her, which suited her perfectly. She listened more than she spoke, and remembered nearly everything. Her life changed when she found a sealed volume describing a nameless fiend who offered power in exchange for a question that could never be withdrawn. Gretel asked why intelligent people repeatedly chose cruelty when kindness was available. The answer came as a coal-red flame in the margins, followed by a pact she did not fully understand. The fiend's magic now burns through her hands when she casts, but Gretel refuses to become its servant. She travels from archive to archive seeking a way to rewrite the pact, while using its power to protect the helpless and recover texts destroyed by tyrants, warlords, and careless wizards.
