Appearance
Savaresh is a broad-shouldered human man with weather-browned skin, a thick dark beard cut short for practicality, and black hair usually tied at the nape with a strip of faded blue cloth. His nose is slightly flattened from years of drill-yard sparring, but his face is otherwise open and expressive. He stands with his weight settled onto the balls of his feet, as if every quiet moment might become a charge. His hands are heavily calloused from spear work, shield drills, and wagon repairs. He wears well-maintained chain mail beneath a weather-stained soldier's cloak, with a greataxe at his back and several handaxes at his belt.
Mannerisms
When waiting, Savaresh keeps his body angled toward the nearest exit and rolls his shoulders as though loosening armor that is no longer there. He checks the straps of his gear whenever a conversation grows tense. He speaks quietly until someone threatens another person, at which point his voice becomes startlingly calm.
Personality
Savaresh is blunt, protective, and more patient with frightened people than with confident fools. He dislikes grand speeches but remembers small kindnesses for years. He enjoys repairing broken straps, cooking over poor fires, and listening to old soldiers complain about how much better everything used to be.
Ideals
Freedom. No law, banner, or commander is more important than a living person's right to choose their own path.
Bonds
The villagers he saved still send him small parcels of dried fruit and blue-dyed thread. He considers their survival his true military record, and he will risk himself to defend them or anyone placed under his protection.
Flaws
He distrusts orders delivered with ceremony and assumes that anyone invoking duty is hiding a selfish motive. When frightened or ashamed, he becomes argumentative rather than admitting uncertainty. He also has a dangerous habit of accepting responsibility for problems that are not truly his to solve.
Quirks
Background
Savaresh grew up in a river-port district where human families, traders, and discharged soldiers crowded together beneath the same salt-stained roofs. He was strong before he was clever, and he learned early that strength was most useful when placed between danger and someone smaller. At seventeen, he joined a border levy after seeing a patrol return without its youngest recruit. The army gave him discipline, a spear, and a place to direct the anger he had never learned to name. His unit spent years escorting supply wagons through contested valleys and breaking up raids along the frontier. Savaresh became known for holding a line after others had begun to run, but he eventually abandoned formal service when an officer ordered his soldiers to burn a farming hamlet suspected of aiding rebels. Savaresh refused, struck the officer's sword from his hand, and led the villagers out through the hills instead. Branded unreliable by the command, he now travels as a free sword with a strict personal rule: he will fight almost anyone who preys on the helpless, but he will never again let a uniform decide who deserves mercy.
