Features
11 featuresBonus action
- RageLevel 1
Rutger can enter a rage three times per long rest, as a bonus action. While raging for up to 1 minute, he has advantage on Strength checks and Strength saving throws, gains resistance to bludgeoning, piercing, and slashing damage, and adds 2 damage to Strength-based melee weapon attacks. Rage ends early if he is knocked unconscious or his turn ends without him attacking a hostile creature or taking damage.
Always on
- Unarmored DefenseLevel 1
While not wearing armor, Rutger’s AC equals 10 + his Dexterity modifier + his Constitution modifier. He can use a shield and still gain this benefit.
- Danger SenseLevel 2
Rutger has advantage on Dexterity saving throws against effects he can see, such as traps and spells. He does not gain this benefit while blinded, deafened, or incapacitated.
- Reckless AttackLevel 2
On his turn, Rutger can choose to attack recklessly. He gains advantage on Strength-based melee weapon attack rolls that turn, but attack rolls against him have advantage until his next turn.
- Totem Spirit: BearLevel 3
Rutger follows the Path of the Totem Warrior and chooses the bear totem. While raging, he has resistance to all damage except psychic damage.

Rutger can make two attacks, instead of one, whenever he takes the Attack action on his turn.

Appearance
Rutger is broad through the shoulders and comfortable taking up more room than a campfire bench allows. His pale blue eyes stay alert even when he is laughing. He wears a weathered wool tunic patched neatly at the elbows, a belt that sits a little too tight, and a leather shield strap he oils with almost fussy care. His blond hair is tied back with plain cord, and his beard is kept short enough not to catch in a helmet.
Mannerisms
He checks his shield strap before speaking seriously, and tends to stand close enough that people have to decide whether to step back. When angered, he goes quiet rather than shouting.
Personality
Blunt, funny, and fiercely attentive to the people he considers his own. He can turn a tense moment into laughter, then ruin the ease by insisting everyone train before supper. He is trying to listen more than he lectures, with uneven success.
Ideals
Strength should make others safer, not smaller. He is trying to live by that belief, though he still thinks the lesson is best taught with a sparring match.
Bonds
His younger brother and cousins are his responsibility, though he is learning that responsibility is not the same as command. He hopes, privately, to build a household of his own someday.
Flaws
He mistakes silence for agreement and resistance for disrespect. When he feels his family pulling away, his temper rises before his better sense can catch it.
Quirks
Background
Rutger Kholson grew up among the Jomsvikings, where his strength and nerve made him useful before his judgment had time to catch up. When his father left him responsible for his younger brother and several cousins, Rutger did what he understood: he trained them hard, kept them alive, and expected them to follow his lead. They each found their own trades in the woods and settlements, while Rutger returned to raiding, where a quick axe and a quicker retort could settle most arguments.
